So I've never been the type to go out of my way to help anyone. If asked I always obliged but I guess I never really thought about it much.

A member of this board has been donating his time on thanksgiving to help those in need. BG has inspired me to look into what I can do in my area. My family has moved away, my daughter will be with her mother, an if I choose to I can spend thanksgiving with my gf's family.

I've been searching for a soup kitchen for a bit and eventually found one that still needed help. So this thanksgiving - ill be helping at a soup kitchen to serve the homeless and those without family.

I write this post with hopes of maybe inspiring someone else to help someone. There's many ways to help - you just hafta find out how.

    Hope everyone enjoys their holiday!

I'm already donating time with muscular dystrophy patients. So I guess I can donate money locally. Good idea.

Hats off to you guys for doing this..

Althought I haven't done it in a while, I did some volunteering in the past and its pretty eye opening and can be gratifying to know you've made a difference.

    Great job.

We have a local food pantry that the wife and I contribute to regularly. It's a shame to see how empty their shelves are when we make a drop.
Also, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff that gets donated. I've seen literally three 5 gallon buckets of peach filling for donuts sitting there....
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

It's never too late to start. You don't have to donate money or toys..... You can give a few hours of your day. Sometimes we take for granted that we have a big feast. Some families say a prayer and give thanks..... Why not just take a few hours to serve food to someone who otherwise can't afford it or has nowhere else to go.

Idunno..... I'm not preaching to anyone as ill be 30 in may and havnt ever done anything like this. It's more for those interested - that's all :-)

Its good to help people in need. The rewards are very self fulfilling and can bring ssatisfaction. I help many in certain ways and many others don't even know of my help.

    Well done haz

I guarantee you it will be greatly appreciated. Every little bit makes a difference. A few cans of salmon here....Some tins of oatmeal. Sometimes we'll call and see what they need the most and then hit the sale papers so they get the most for the $$ spent.

This may sound odd but I've taken my dog to local nursing homes on their "dog days" to visit with the elderly. They absolutely love the affection from animals when stuck in homes. Really makes their day! This little girl REALLY puts a smile on their faces:

That's definitely a good thing. A couple of the mastiff breeders I've known for awhile do the therapy dog thing . Really does bring a smile to those in need of a little attention.

When we pet animals we release serotonin and oxytocin..... As do the animals. There's really a chemical bond we create with them.

Good stuff. If time allows, at some point take a plate of food & sit/eat/talk with the people you've been serving. It brings a whole new perspective to why you're there...

My dad was President and currently Treasurer of a local charity organization that helps families cope with the loss of family members, with a focus on the deaths of young children, so mainly parents who have lost children. We help as a family with fundraisers.

I was kind of glad that they were shut down. You know those were days that they weren't pissing away your money. Until they reimbursed the furloughed workers (which was bullshit).

My wife and I donate food to our local salvation army.During the Christmas season we ( meaning my wife) will buy a few gifts for some local kids. These kids are from families that have fallen on hard times and would not have a Christmas if it wasn't for people helping out.
