Total gym
I am actually surprised on how well the total gym isolates the muscles you're trying to exercise. I can actually see it being very effective. Some exercises I had to put a plate on the sled, and its pretty much worthless for legs, but over all I was very impressed.

i buy the big5 version of chuck norris' total gym. this one has a flip plate for the feet and rubber band tensioners. now i know the bloke above me said totally worthless for legs. but i don't think so. I do one legged squats with full range of motion (ass to heal and then all the way up straight) and all four bands to maximize the tension. From there, you can put or two plates on your chest for additional weight. This is not ideal, but you will be surprised the degree of difficulty this thing can get. This is how i worked my legs (amongst other things) last time i was here in afghanistan and not much gym equipment. i bought the equipment myself and had it airshipped to me. Few of the other blokes working with me could do more than a few one legged squats without any additional plates. so sometimes you have to think "outside the box" to get the equipment you have to exercise the muscle groups you need for a full body workout.

Ha! When i lived in Georgia i had a hillbilly gym. Instead of a bench press, we would do pushups with cinder blocks on our backside by the shoulders.
instead of a squat rack, we had a pole with rope on both ends, and big buckets of cement tied to the ends of the rope.
instead of a shoulder press, we would do head stand pushups. You know what i'm talking about.
i don't remember all the "equipment" we had, but it wasn't much. we never grew huge, but we were strong like rip chords. I could do more pushups than any other bloke in our battalion of about 800 guys (hundreds of pushups, hence the cinderblocks on the shoulders) I bet a bloke one time i could easy do 500 situps. $20. He held my feet, and i knocked out the 500 quick. I asked him if he wanted to go double or nothing for a thousand situps. he declined.
i've never used the excuse of "lack of equipment" for not exercising. There are always ways to exercise muscle groups for which you lack equipment. But you can't concern yourself with how silly it might look.

Remember that gym in the 3rd world country where the benches are chained to the ground.

Most any of those things work as long as you actually use them. The problem with these home gyms be it a Total Gym type, universal gym, bowflex or treadmill is they get put in the garage eventually or turned into a clothes rack.

we had steel poles that instead of weights on either end, and buckets of cement in them. and we would use that for curling. but it wasn't much weight. so for that one, i had a real bar and maybe a hundred pounds of real weight. it wasn't a 100% hillbilly gym, but almost.....
