Had the same problem last year. ENT doc said it is odd as he says there's an explosion of number of people with nose bleeds. Don't pick at it, have your blood pressure checked and irrigate your nose up both nostrils with a saline solution several times a day for 10 days and then repeat as needed for two weeks and see if it stops. If not go see an ENT. Cauterizing is not painful and can be done in office and if that fails surgical blockage can be done if it is an artery problem.

Apologies FrankieC and with all due respect ... Don't take aspirin as it will inhibit blood clumping which you want to aid in stopping bleeding. That's why people are told to stop taking blood thinners and aspirin prior to any surgeries. But Frankie is correct in having bp checked. Flushing up nostrils with saline solution as deep into sinus cavities as possible works great and should be frequent routine for everyone, nose bleeds or not. Sinuses are breeding grounds for staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (leading culprit in all infections) and flushing them frequently helps rid staph a breeding grounds. Besides, actually feels great and breathing is much, much improved ... an added bonus for working out and cardio.

WTF ever, Cauterization freaking blows. I had it done to one side of my nose years ago and it wasn't any fun. I still get nosebleeds by the way, although I got a beer bottle crushed across my face after the cauterization and it broke my nose in several places.

Like Spywizard said, get some sort of nasal spray and use it when you feel your nose drying out. I can kinda tell when a nosebleed is coming on and a squirt of nasal spray can stop it. I'm not sure what spray I have but its doctor presrcibed.

I dunno what to tell you guys, I had my nose cauterized 3 times and each time it didn't hurt, but the ENT localized the area really well first; though didn't stop the bleeding and had to have surgery. I suggest the deep nose flush as it cleans out deep in the sinuses -- huge ugly chunks come out -- make your gf watch, she'll freak and won't kiss you for the rest of the day. What you say about Ocean Spray is correct, it kinda lubricates the insides of the nasal passages and keeps them moist and from drying out which can cause cracking, leading to picking, leading to bleeding. And I mean big freakin' chunks! Flushing out helps with the breathing and cleaning out breeding material for bacteria.

Not sure how to prevent the bleeding, but a good way to stop it once it starts is to soak a hand towel in cold water and put it on your forehead.

double check the asprin advice, asprin will increase your bleeding time. but on the flip side it good for your heart
direct pressure squeezing your nose put head between your knees when siting in a chair and neosnephrin will help stem the flow.
