Var and heart surgery?
If a person had heart surgery last may, would it be safe to take var? What would the complications be? And I know clen wouldn't be safe, but I would really appreciate educated answers please. Oh and to be specific, lhc surgery.

I think the issue is that she already had heart surgery. The first thing we need to figure out is why she had surgery in the first place. Then if she is on any medication (ie Warfarin) to make sure there will be no interactions.
Var may be an option for her. Var has been found in some studies to aid in incresing arterial blood flow and help building heart muscle. It is prescibed to many people (burn victims being the most prevelant) to aid in recovery. While steroids in general are not recomended to people post cardiactric surgery, I belive that to be because of water retention, and increased risck of cardiac edema. Var does not have the same water retention properties and could be a viable option.
Steroids have been found to enhance cardiac output in post surgery cadiactric patience, but because of the added risk of edema they aregenerally avoided. Being that this not really post surgery...I asume she the risk of edema in not previlant.
My neighbor runs the cardiactric unit at the hospital and I have picked his brain about steroids and the heart many times.
Have her talk to her doctor...If she decides to do it...I would have her start at a dose of 2.5mg per day, and ramp up very slowly under doctor supervision.Last edited by damiongage; 05-12-2008 at 06:49 PM.

i would say that looking at the big picture, i would ask myself one question..... would the benefits outweigh the risks here? my opinion is no, even though we dont know exactly what the procedure was done for. so please give us the most detailed info you can about why this heart cath was done. it may shed more light on the subject.

If you are only taking 5mg of the var, I wouldn't think it would be too much of a problem, but remember that the heart is a muscle as well. But absolutely not to the Clen , that's my advice as a nurse.
