broke the ampule...

I was opening an ampule of Omnadren a few minutes ago and I accidentally broke the off the top as I was scoring it.....I didn't see any glass in the juice so I went ahead and injected....

Everything went fine but I was just sitting here wondering if anyone has ever injected a little piece of glass into their muscle???

Thats what I was thinking, but damn thats kinda disturbing to think about....imagine a little tiny piece of glass inbedded deep in your muscle.. damn

20+ yrs and NEVER injected any glass.

I was wondering the same damn thing....I've never used amp's but i always thought what would happen if glass got into the gear

has anyone on here ever hear of an ampule opener?!they are like 3 bucks.
they score for you and have a spot that hold on to the top to help you break the top off without cutting yourself or getting any glass in the ampule.

I did just what you did with my forst ampule.
needless to say i had an ampule opener within 3 days.
The thought of injecting glass is not something I would think would be enjoyable!
And i would think there has to be some chance of the glass fragmenting small enough to pass through a needle. And thats good enough for me!

yup amp openers are the way to go..although ive always just used a womans nail file, score for like a minute and it breaks right off no problem.. never had any actualy pop on me before..

Here's an opener for you. Score the top with a file, then up a pen cap put it over the top and snap. Very easy.

Every time I do it, I score the neck with a serrated knife and then just pop it over....this is my first incident in about 20 attempts

ahhhh, that is one hell of good point...never thought about it like that.

that's the whole "pop" sound when you open them....ya, they have positive pressure in them because of the sealing precess.

not that it would make a big difference anyway:
1 - the glass shard wouldn't be small enough to be sucked up into the syringe to be injected
2 - even if it was small enough to be sucked up and injected, do you really think something that small would cause any type of problems? Doctors leave whole bullets in people because they "arn't worth taking out"
3 - if you are worried about infection...that's what cleaning the amp neck with an alcohol swab is all about. And also, that's one of the reasons there is BA/BB in the oil, to kill off bacteria

This isn't as big of a deal as you think it is.

shouldnt be an issue. In the hospital pharmacy that I work at as a pharmacist intern...we use filter needles STRICTLY for ampules...but that is for IV use...you should be good...if it hurts extra long and is clearly infected take some asprin for swelling and head to the DR for antibiotics

i just break them with my hand. no nail file or amp opener. i hold the bottom and snap the top off. probably not the best way but it works and i have never injected glass, or at least i hope a havnt

I've broken amps using an ampule opener. And cut myself in the process. Some people like using amps. I prefer vials.
