A lot of reasons, HMO structure causes a lot of waste, lots of lawsuits against doctors for malpractice, greed, ect.

a better question would be: Why do american doctors prescribe abusable/addictive drugs like its a godamned rave party? i live on the border between canada and the US and the difference in that regard is retarded. everyone knows someone whos on xanax or klonopin or adderall in the states. in canada people mostly got no idea.

because law suits. a lot of doctors pay like 8 grand a month just to protect themselves also a lot of their clients dont pay so they have to make up for that somewhere.

i give docs credit for one thing - fighting with the damn insurance companies. What a bunch of idiots THEY are. Half the time i think doctors rates are exorbitant (btw in this case $50 -= very reasonable) because the damn ins companies will only pay them a fraction of the claim.

Great post.
Another thing that pisses me off is the american "war on drugs". The most abused drugs in the U.S. are perscription drugs. The worst is oxycontin. This stuff is being used in massive quantities by addicts, yet it is only perscribed for the most severe pain, like the end stage of cancer. Why the f**k do the pharmacutical companies make so much of it. There shouldn't be enough available to supply all the junkies. If the U.S. government had any real interest in keeping its citizens off drugs they would go after the pharmacutical companies. Every junkie I've ever known started out on oxycontin and only switched to heroin when their habbit got too expensive.
Sorry about the highjack/rant.

thats not quite true. doctors are just as sh!tty up here. they dont work for you, they work for the pharmeceutical companies. im in the process of looking for a new doctor, because everytime i go in, he just wants to prescribe me a new pill to mask the problem. instead of actually finding out whats wrong with me.

I have been through medical school and most of residency. All of my friends have as well. None of us have ever gotten a thing from a drug company except maybe a half a dozen free meals over the last 6 years. None of us are thinking about drug companies or their interests and none of us change anything we do because of drug companies. There is *no* incentive to prescribe what a given company is pushing.

well im glad you dont fall into the that category of doctor. but it is a very real thing that happens. the incentive to a doctor, is that they get you out the door as quick as possible. so they can see more patients in a day, and make more money. and i could even go as far to say its worse in canada. because they get paid by health care, every time you come in for an appointment. so if the first script they give you doesnt work. then you just have to come back and get a different drug, when they can charge health care for that visit too.
me and a few friends have all been through this crap. its generally not till you get to the point of seeing a specialist, that you find a doctor who actually cares about your health.
you might not think you work for the pharmeceutical companies. but think about how much actual natural healing techniques you learned in school. i doubt it was many. you mostly learn what you can prescribe to someone. and this isnt my own personal opinion. this is what ive been told by other doctors.
