Prolactin level control?
I am very curious about this prolactin level in male? As I know the high prolactin level can cause low sex drive, even infertility in some extreme case. Can someone give me more educated answer on what's causing high prolactin level in man, and how to lower this hormone if it's too high? Thanks. : )

The prolactin (PRL) is a hormone secreted by front pituitary glands, which has as target organ the breast. It is therefore a typically feminine hormone that in puberal time intervenes together with estrogen to the development of the breast.
Prolactin, is a hormone very important for lactation. The secretion below normal during breast-feeding reduces considerably the production of milk by the mammary glands. The effects of this hormone on male body are not yet been fully defined. A hypersecretion of prolactin in humans is correlated to a lack of sexual desire, gynaecomastia and impotence. A function of prolactin is the one to inhibit the testosterone and mobilize the fatty acids. In the sporting analysis of prolactin in the blood is often crossed with that of so-called "of stress hormones" as cortisol and ACTH.
It has emerged that the secretion of this hormone increases considerably after exercise exhausting. The assumption that high concentration of prolactin are related to over-training.
Also during events particularly stressful as fasting, acute myocardial infarction, burns and stress psycho-physical extended, the secretion of prolactin significantly increases. In these conditions the body takes a desperate attempt to survival, increasing the support for the primary vital functions (heart, brain, kidneys, etc.) and turning off the same time all the functions "ancillary".
The sexual desire and the muscles in these conditions are, totally unnecessary and prolactin goes to turn off, together with other hormones, first the production of testosterone and then of all other gonadotrophins (FSH and LH). This is explained by the effects of hypersecretion of prolactin, so impotence in men, altered menstrual flow in the woman and mobilization of fats in order to ensure energy to vital organs.Last edited by BJJ; 12-06-2009 at 03:36 PM.
