How to tell if you're eating too many calories
Ok, so I had this long discussion with my doctor about how many calories is too much. I was explaining to him how in body building circles people eat up to 5000 calories per day when on cycles. He seems to think that for the majority of people out there 5000 calories is entirely too much. He said a good way to measure if you are eating too many calories for the amount of work you're doing is to get a blood test and measure your triglyceride level. If you're munching on 5000+ calories a day and you come back with levels around 300, guess what, a lot of those calories are not being used. The amount of unused calories directly affects the tryglyceride level in your body. This is a great indicator to see if your calorie intake is too much.
He was saying to get blood tested every week while on a cycle may not be very practical but once a month, if possible, would be beneficial. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

That is interesting and seems legit... only problems is most dr's dont know anything about nutrition as they are only required to take one nutrition class in there 8 years of schooling. A sports medicine dr or sports nutritionist would be a better source of info imho

Even if a doctor was well in tune with what a normal person's diet is supposed to be, they aren't taking in to consideration that bodybuilders and power-lifters have different nutritional requirements than the common man who sits around all day.

wow... I cant belive they even use the bmi anymore.. Its not that that hard to check bf% by calipers in the dr office. takes as much time as wieghing on the scale and checking bmi chart and this more accuratly shows your health the medical industry in the u.s is behind the times...(except when it comes to pharmacudicals)

Yeah I got told I was obese too, not by my doc but from some health screening thing at work. My BMI was 33 but yet my waist line is 34-36. The whole thing with the surplus calories raising triglycerides is sound science though... or at least appears to be.
