    64 million dollar question?!?!?!?!!?

DO you have to aspirate before you inject your gear when using a 1 1/5 needle OR is it pretty much close to impossible to inject into a vein when already in that deep and in the mussel??

THANKS and look forward to replies....

    Mate,

I'll be real honest with you. In the beginning, yes, i would aspirate . Now, i never aspirate. I also use a 1.5 and pin in my arse. When i did aspirate, i never drew blood. maybe i'm just real lucky?

the other thing i noticed, is that when I went in for my trt injection, the RN would NEVER aspirate. not sure why. when i was trained to self inject, the RN never mentioned aspirating. If it was such a huge issue, the RN administering test, and the RN that taught me to self inject should have said something?

General response seems to be ALWAYS ASPIRATE , so I wont advize differently as to not give improper info. Myself however I also use 1.5 in arse and dont aspirate. I attempt occasionally but feel with all the moveing my hands around on the plunger and twisting to see etc, that I may break pin or tear up my muscle from the movement, so I tend to do without......

    T.R..

YOUR a beast brother, thank you! you seem to know your stuff. I think if that pin is deep in the muscle how are you pushing gear into a vein. I understand popular belief and understanding is you must aspirate but after 20 or so times of doing it and not pushing directly into a vein, I stopped as well....

I agree JAB, it hurts in more ways then one to wiggle that pin around and I'm shooting my shoulder. in the arse w/ all that twisting must be brutal..

    Thanks for your imput...

That's just because nearly every drug used in medicine is water-based, so aspirating isn't an issue.

If the RN knew much about oil-based injections (and had been specifically trained in them), she would probably aspirate .

You couldn't be any more wrong. All tissues in your body require perfusion (blood-flow), so there is no such thing as an area free of blood vessels (be it arteries, arterioles, capillaries, or veins).

I aspirate every time. A delt shot had my on the ground coughing my lungs up for a good 15mins, I even aspirated but after doing so I pulled the pin out a few mm as it felt a little weird like a nerve or a vein lol

Both, although the IV is automatic (unless its a pin straight into a vien) you dont need to aspirate when you canulate, I dont stick needles straight into viens.

I dont even understand why people dont. Its not hard or a big deal. Takes one extra second to make sure you are safe when aspirating.

Those who don't I'm sure once they do inject in a vein they will from then on, it's not fun.. As mentioned it takes a split second why wouldn't you.

tbh, she looked like a throw back to the sixties hippy era, and she probably knew her way around a needle before becoming an RN

agree. just because i do a thing doesn't mean it is the right thing for anyone else.

    didn't mean to mislead.

It takes a couple of seconds to aspirate so why not do it to possibly save a couple of minutes of trying to hack up a lung. But it's not a big deal until the one time you should have.
