Moving gear across the country in the u.s.

how am i going to do this...
i'm going from the farthest western point of the US to the most eastern side of the US.

i'm assuming everything i'm shipping will be x ray'd in some fashion.

An idea i have is to put them in my toiletries bag. once you see a tooth brush and a few other bathroom products, nobody ever even bats and eye. toiletries are probably a number one common occurrence on x ray machines, quite boring in fact.

ok, here is a list of the shipping types i'll be using.

    shipping car

    shipping home furnishings

    my luggage and carry ons

and what about tearing labels off? how the heck am i going to know what the heck I've got?

Things are not x rayed unless they go through customs. As long as everything is sent from the US to the US nothing will be checked

Just FedEx it, unless it leaks or smells you have nothing to worry about.

FedEx, really? that easy? i have no to address to FedEx it to, unless i can FedEx it to a nearby FedEx, which i think i can. picking it up would be difficult. because where i'm going is remote and i'll have no vehicle except a taxi

i'd rather bring it with me. what are the advantages of using FedEx?

Sorry I misread. Maybe put your oils in empty shampoo bottles, mini ones maybe. Toss it in your luggage

UPS or FedEx, just pack it well. They will only open it if the package busts open of it's own accord or shows signs of a leak from inside. No xrays or anything of that sort if domestic. I used to work at a hub, trust me your fine.

Are you going to a hotel? Any hotel will receive a package for you. Stores that have rental mailboxes too will work.

Shipping it will work fine but remember this time of year you stand a good chance of the gear freezing.

i would rather bring it with me on the plane. i'm not trying to be hard headed, but if bringing them on the plane with me is viable, i'm going to do that

    no hotel.

I would ship it USPS as they can't legally search your packages. Way to risky taking on a plan without a script.

I took my test on a plan (have a script) in my toiletry bag and was never searched or questioned, but it's still a chance I would not take.

UPS or FedEx. I personally wouldn't use the federal mail (USPS) for shipping gear if there are courier resources.

I remember a while back someone asking the board sponsor if they will ship other carriers and his response was no, USPS only since they can not open package. This lead me to believe ups and fedex can open your package at their discretion but I could be wrong.

Either way, as long as it's packaged good as to not break and leak, I wouldn't worry much regardless of the courier.

*edit - from fedex terms & conditions: Inspection of Shipments - We may, at our sole discretion, open and inspect any shipment without notice. Governmental authorities may also open and inspect any shipment at any time.

Good info Dave. I think I'd still prefer a courier over USPS. Where's our attorneys on the board? Lol.

    1. Is there a greater conviction to being busted shipping illegal drugs through USPS vs. courier?
    2. Can USPS open mail/packages at their discretion?

Did no one hear me when I said I formerly was employed at one of the largest UPS hubs? They don't open packages randomly. Their only concern is packages that pose a safety hazard. If something is leaking out, a dude in a hazmat suit will open it up to make sure its not toxic. If a big heavy box squishes a small weak box, they'll look for damage. Those are the only times. So if you package it well, you will be fine. There are no dogs, no xrays, nothing of the sort. The primary security at small package facilities is to watch the employees to make sure they aren't stealing, not to check the contents of what people are shipping.

Why risk it. Ship the gear or take a road trip. Nothing is worth a criminal record. You will be sitting in the airport in handcuffs thinking what a ****ing dumbass I am. Give the package to someone before you leave and have them send it to you when you get your address

    UPS - inspection of shipments:

UPS reserves the right in its sole discretion to open and inspect any package tendered to it for transportation, but is not required to do so.

Both fedex and ups can open at their own discretion. Will they? Doubtful...

USPS, being a government body, has to obtain a warrant before opening the package to my understanding. Still looking in the terms but I have found this info online as well as from our very own board sponsor AR-R whom only uses usps for the above reason.

Interesting.....peculiar but interesting. So a private company "could" without requiring any writ, open a package, yet the federal government has to observe due process.

They will all open a package if they suspect its a hazard (leaking), even usps. None of them are randomly opening packages. Your 100% safe if you pack it well. Using USPS because you think they need a warrant is dumb. Whoever is passing that info around is misinformed.

I've pierced one vial, so will that vial leak at high altitude? I'm betting that it will leak if liquid is touching the top. if it can leak, any idea on how to prevent it from leaking?

I wouldn't worry too much - your just talking about a little oil dribbling out the side, not so much that it will be visible on the outside. Keep it upright, wrap it in some paper towels to absorb dribble, and put it in a plastic bag and you'd be fine. Also, ship ground so you don't have to deal with altitude stuff.

With all due respect GGR If I were in law enforcement I would have to give you a full body search just to make sure you were not trying to hide anything.
