Thread: BD Luer lock suck

BD Luer lock suck
I have the 1 ml syringes and soon as I get oil in them it’s like pushing sand through a needle. I have to press so hard my fingers turn white and start shaking. And the plunger doesn’t even move. When it does move its like .5 mm at a time. Good thing I bought a couple of hundred of theses. Anyone experience anything like this?

What are you pushing through the syringe and what guage needle?

I’m pushing .3 ml deca / .3 test / .4 primo. No highly concentrated stuff. 25 gauge, 5/8”.

I used the same needles with Excel syringes and there’s no issue.

Do any of them use EO as a solvent/carrier? I've never had an issue with B-D unless ethyl oleate was used as a solvent.

I don’t think so, but can’t be sure. I looked it up and it says EO has a strong unpleasant scent, but these oils are pretty much scent-free. After I injected the oil, I tried moving the plunger and it was still really hard from that tiny amount left in the barrel. Weird, maybe they’re some bootleg BD. Got em from East Coast Medical Supply.

That supplier has been good in the past. I've never noticed a strong smell from EO, or at least not strong like say.... guaiacol. If there's any ethyl oleate in your oils, I'd say that's the culprit.
Edit: Testolic was notorious for causing the plunger to lock up.Last edited by almostgone; 02-14-2021 at 12:29 PM.

Interesting because they are by far my favorite pins, by a long shot. I just did a reorder and don’t know if I was tired or what but ended up ordering 200 knock offs and I was crushed, lol.

eo has no smell, that dumb ass people on the internet confusing guiacol with eo. also just a tip BD barrels blow, and nipro is even worse. if you want hands down the best combination for injections you buy exel syringes with the no loss plunger (it has a nipple that fills the luer lock hub so you get everything out). then you buy terumo needles which have been proven in studies to be the sharpest needle available. the exel plungers are the most solvent resistant i have found. even drawing 100% eo the plungers will not degrade if you inject right away.
nipro plungers will degrade with less than 10% eo in just a minute or less sometimes. i guarantee the exel terumo combo to be the best out there. terumo needles are much harder to come by these days only 1 or 2 suppliers but well worth it. i usually order 300 plus at a time.

eo will literally melt the plunger to a point where you will see pieces fall off, or the plunger leave black streaks along the barrel. i have like 300 nipro syringes that will do the same thing and the oils have no eo. i made the oils myself, i also have some from one of my favorite labs that will do the same thing. he uses no eo, but we both use miglyol 840 as a carrier oil. its the only thing i can come up with for the nipro syringes, and a carrier oil shouldn't eat a plunger.

Other than the EO issue, I've always had good luck with B--D and Nipro.
Now, for me, Covidien absolutely suck. They sharpen the tip of the needles at a funky angle or something and the plungers are always a pain.
Years ago, there was industrial EO being used in oils and man, it was ridiculous. Even the vial stoppers would bulge and distort. About the only thing EO didn't eat was the silicone stoppers. The place that was supplying nasty EO back then finally got shut down for other issues.Last edited by almostgone; 02-14-2021 at 01:35 PM.

First post on this particularly site so hello. Your problem maybe the 1ml syringe. Every thing is so constricted I bet it is making it harder to get it thorough. I would try some 3 mls syringes. Also you could heat the syringe in hot water.

I use 25g BD luers also. Was this while injecting? Or like just trying to push air out prior to?
I’ve hit a couple times, which I thought was just crazy scar tissue, an area that was a fucking nightmare trying to push oil through like you described. After a few minutes of squeezing and leaving dark red purple plunger imprints in my fingers and only half of 1ml injected, I finally pulled out and pinned the rest in the shoulder.

Had to laugh because I accidentally ordered some fucking “off brand” from Med Vet and was pulling just past the 3cc mark (like I’ve done a million times with BD’s) and the plunger pulled all the way out and oil flew all over my mirror and sink in my bathroom.
Have NEVER had that happen with BD’s. It was a waste of 3 mg’s and cleaning that shit up off all of my toiletries took forever. Grrrrrr

Just get a bigger gauge man. Nothing smaller than a 21 gauge if you want an easy injection.

exel you can get a little over 4ml in one of there 3ml barrels. which is another thing i love because i can load a full 3ml and still have over .5ml of air to push the oil.
i also appreciate the kind words, but currently doing a write up is beyond my abilities.

Weird they've been fine for me so far but they're definitely not the quality of the work ones. Oddly enough BD leur lock 1cc is what we had in stock at the emergency department during the 1cc syringe shortage haha. Luckily it was only a couple of weeks though.

You were right.
Just pinned only the test + primo and it was smooth as anything.
...
Even so, I think I'm gonna stick with Exel syringes from now on... I don't need the locking mechanism and these BDs weigh like 4x the other syringes. With the Exel I can let the syringe and needle just sit in my delt after I pin, but I can't do that with the BD because of the weight.
