The only exception is if a specific department has adopted a policy to test for AS for whatever reason, but as a rule I would say almost no departments check for AS. Believe opinions if you want, but I know this to be a fact.
Just because your dept doesn't check for AAS's doesn't mean his dept will not test for them. Plain and simple, this is all I'm saying. Wouldn't you love having to explain to your S.O. why you lost your job just because someone told you that they didn't check for AAS's when they do and you didn't plan for it and you got fired over it? I dought that another fire dept would give you a job after getting fired for failing a drug test.

    Just my $.02.

I have bros in over 50 fire depts all over the country, and none of them are tested for AS, just your regular recreational drugs, so it's not just my department. I said there may be departments that do it, but if so it is EXTREMELY rare. The only ones that would test would be ones that have had situations involving AS problems before (like on the job injuries and then docs trying to blame steroids or something like that). Do IO know every departments standard operating procedures? No, but i do know that there is not one dept that I have heard of that does it, and I do have a pretty broad knowledge of the departments. Federal firefighters (such as military firefighters and federal forestry firefighters) may fall into a different group, so I won't comment on them but the city, county, and state level firefighters are not tested.

Besides, you won't lose your job anyways because in most departments when you are caught on drugs all you have to do is say you have a problemand request counseling and they cannot fire you. It's a loophole that is a joke in the fire service.

    Howdy firefitr,

That's good to know. I didn't think about all the firemen being one big family. I know the ones around here all know each other even if the work 100 miles from each other.

I just didn't want someone to get jambed up in a drug test by thinking they don't test for AAS's. I know most jobs don't test, but a few do.

    Sten,
I was a firefighter for 4 years in a large city and was never tested for AS. The amount of testing that you went through is nothing short of extreme!! And, I can now see where you are coming from.

As to the DOT basic test, it is not comprehensive in the least, which is what I was trying to illustrate. They do not even check for alcohol. I oversee all drug testing for our company and had a nice chat today with our contracted lab. The basic test we have our employees go through is much more thorough than the DOT. I was surprised to see how little they test for.

    Thanks for the compliment!

Been there done that. I've got a total of 7 years in the military. Combat vet w/ over 25 missions. I've been shot, stabbed w/ an icepick, cut 3X's w/ a knife, an burned my lt leg from a flash-bang grenade.

Experince.....Honduras '83, '84, '85; Costa Rica & Nicaragua '84 & '85; Egypt, Turkey, and Brazil in '87; Philippines, Korea, Kooloon, Saudia, Oman, Qatar, UAE in '88 & '89: Peru in '90. All the stuff in '89 & '90 was while I worked for Uncle Sam after I got out of the military. I can't hear much w/ my left ear due to gun fire, so I had to retire. Since I can't hear I can't get a job where you have to pass a hearing test.

P.S. In Jan. '88, the DoD ruled AAS's a prohibited drug and started testing for it. I knew several people that got discharged w/ OTH discharges that tested + for AAS's. I don't know if they still test for AAS's but they did in '88.

You must be a lefty. Earplugs don't do much good when you need to tell someone to get their as* the fuc* down, or hear them telling you. Earplugs or no, SMAWs and AT-4s will get you in the habit of saying "what?" quickly.

I remember back in 88-89, the Marines were rumored to be testing for AAS. but only if the individuals CO thought it necessary on an individual basis...the Marines have a budget too....

My friend was tested, but only after pinz and vials were found in his room and he denied using them. He also had a little bit of an anger problem.

I work for the 9th largest fire dept. in the nation, its in our union by-laws what will be tested. They cannot test for it unless they have reason and its specified. Also before this was in our by-laws. NOONE ever was tested for AAS. I have seen some scrawny rookies come in and within 2 years look like monsters. I have heard even some of our chiefs talk and joke about someone being on steriods . Its just to expensive

In early '88, I escorted two Marines from the Philippines to the Navy brig in Seattle, WA that had been popped for AAS's in a piss test.

Nope, I'm a righty. My left ear faced to enemy. We used mainly used MP-5SD w/ a suppressor, but they usually used AK-47's. I have a little hearing in the lower ranges w/ my left ear, but nothing in the higher ranges. My right ear is just below avg. in all ranges.

I work for a division of a major oil company in Canada and when you are hired they do a blood and urine test along with a physical. One of the guys I work with is a national level BB who uses gear all year round and a bunch of the other guys use recreational drugs so I figured these guys would fail the tests for sure. Boy was I wrong I asked the doctor when I was being tested what the company was looking for and he said they were looking for signs of people who are drinkers who may end up filling out insurance claims because of organ failure. What a joke!
