Knee brace or no brace for lifting?

Its been a slow recovery from a year ago with my knee surgery ( severed the anterior cruciate ligament). I can get around just fine with work, also with some lifting ( can do my regiment without it, but I can feel it, like it is going to bulge out the side when I squat) I'm not going extreme with it.. It actually been feeling great now where I can do a fast jog on it.. and no worries when I go heavy ruck sack hiking, just need to watch my footing..

Was wondering if a knee brace may hinder strength development?

i think you should still take it easy for a little longer.... using a knee brace will help , BUT it may also do worst to your knee, because IF you have one on, when you train, im sure, you will try to go heavier on your work outs; by doing that, you may do worst to your knee...having said that, i would use a knee brace all day or part of the day, but take it off, when you work out...

I would for sure ask a surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and is familiar with the surgery done.

Rippetoe is a big proponent for knee straps when squatting. There is a video out there for what specifications to use.

I would make sure you are good with your doc. I had knee surgery 14 years ago and must have another one. Squats are my favorite and looks like I will be out of the game awhile.

My doc (surgeon) approves no brace for normal day to day stuff, but is worried about having my knee taken out from under me, so brace for when I do fun stuff.. No brace for weights, he said the "bulging" feeling is normal and might be sticking with me for awhile

I just had an arthroscope done a few months ago. I asked my doc if I should use a knee brace for lifting, and he said there was no reason why I should.
