not all of us get a chance of having a good education or a good paying job. when i was a kid, my mom was a single parent who worked full time and went to community college at night. we were on government assistance until she finished school. of course there will always be people who abuse things but to call all people on welfare lazy or any other names is just ignorant.

I don't want to be insensitive, but don't you think there was a lapse in responsibility in becoming a single mother? I realize that your particular situation may be different (dad bailed, died, etc) but how many people are banging and running these days?

    Wrap it up, B!

im sure you never made any mistakes in your life. and not sound insensitive? it sounds to me like your saying i was a mistake.

my dad was a drug addicted loser and ended up in prison. i never knew him and i think my mom made the right choice by never having anything to do with him after the fact. without the support of our government, i doubt she would have been able to do what she did. now she is a registered nurse and deals in real estate on the side.

Haus, you don't have to explain your shitz to anyone.... good job to your mom.... and if someone wants to hate on situations it is because they don't know anything else except to sit back and analyze it with hypothesis... I am not a child raised from the welfare system...but, my sister had to use it for a period of time when her boy was real sick from birth and dad was out of picture... she was able to get situated and now is finishing a double major on masters degree and a good citizen of society that recieved a helping hand when needed.

Welfare out of control or your economy in the shitter?

During the great depression would you have called all the people outside soup kitchens scroungers?

Welfare is government controlled rationing of wealth, while soup kitchens are charity. Don't confuse the two.

"And supplemental food programs for poor families are struggling to keep up with the added demand as donations are on the decline."

from that article, it's not talking about Welfare it's talking about charity.

It is talking about welfare. The article is stating that because of rising food costs and increased welfare participants, the 'soup kitchens' (charity) are stuggling to keep up with added demand.

I'm not a socialist. I don't believe in paying for some one not to work just like i wouldn't feel right about some one paying me.

the welfare system has its potential uses for thing such as injury at work, disability etc and for people that are genuinely trying to make their lives more successful through education etc.

the people (too many of them) that take advantage of the system are the problem.

If you can walk and have a conversation with other people, you can work.

    You don't actually believe that?

I can tell you that here a minimum wage job at 50 hours a week barely pays the rent. Never mind buying food.

So just because it barely pays the rent you shouldn't work?

I never said that, don't put words in my mouth it's unsanitary!

You said "any job is good right?", and I'm answering that maybe not...

I mean when you work crazy hours and can't even make a basic living wage for your family, something is definetly wrong with the system.

As for welfare, it wouldn't exist if I were in charge. On the other hand, I have nothing against government "social assistance" where the government helps out someone who works their 40+ hours and just can't cover the basic expences of living like food, rent and clothing.

it's about $8 on my side of the country I think. I think they were talking about raising it to $9, not sure if they did that yet. USA and Canadian dollar are pretty much the same right now.

In my province, it's $8 an hour. By the way the US and Canadian $ are at par...

Considering the government takes away around 20-30% in various taxes, "take home" pay is a bit lower...

So imagine someone works 42 hours (the legal work week) at $8... thats $332 per week, roughly $250 after taxes. At at the end of the month you have $1000 clear in your pockets.

Average rent around here is $800 to $1500 for a basic 2 bedroom appartment. You can get a slumb in a gang run ghetto for around $700. That leaves you $200-300 for the month to cover for food, car payment or bus passes, gas, electricity, telephone, clothes, medecine and school or daycare expenses for your family. No way one can make ends meet without working insane hours and a little help.

I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence that your welfare is at a record high and you're in a depression (yes you are). Times are tough for some people down there depending on their field of work.

I have no problem w/ the genuinely needy, disabled, etc., getting a helping hand. Especially a single working parent struggling to make ends meet.

But people who abuse the system should be...hmmm...tased like an 11-year-old outta control girl!

    thats insane.

I'm a barman in the UK I get $15 an hour, plus I get paid $15,000 a year in grants etc to go to school.

So I'm on a good $30,000 even only working part time, more than enough to pay my bills, rent, car, food, take my little brother to Reading festival this summer ($800) go on a holiday to Cuba, China and Spain (in the last year)

I'd hate to be a student in the US.

That makes sense, all the major cities are so expensive to live in. I would love to live in Toronto but it's just way to costly to live there. Montreal is nice too, but there are just too many Habs fans to deal with there

There are many outside Montreal too, games in Ottawa, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Florida and Boston makes you forget its not a home game.

There will always be those who choose not to compete in a Capitalist Society, that will never change. It shouldnt be the responsiblity of those who do to be burdened by them, that is not how a capitalist society is suppose to operate. However given that fact that capitalism can bread tremendous success, those who benefit the most should give back to the society. Time and time again private enterprise has proven to me more effective in helping the less fortunate. The Government should only set the conditions for someone to succeed, private charity should be the avenue to help those who havent. With America being the most charitable society in the world there is no reason that it could not be better than any government controlled program.

They do by providing jobs, cheap products/service, and boosting the economy. We'd be screwed without them.

I don't like the fact that the middle class true hard working citizens get screwed. the rich yuppies already have their millions and can eat like a king. the poor get to go to the grocery store and load up. the low-middle class get screwed cause they are hard working and just making ends meet and have to eat tuna fish and ramen noodles to survive. i guess it's good for some poor people who are genuinely trying to make better. but, i've seen too many people break the system...just plain degenerates who wanna sit at home and keep having babies and getting food stamps working the system.
