    Phelps 12,000 calorie diet

A New York Post account of Phelps’s… wait for it… 12,000-calorie-a-day diet, gave us a stomachache. Could one human being really consume that much and still be in Phelps’s shape? And could this possibly be healthy for Phelps, even considering his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week exercise regimen?

Here’s Phelps’s typical menu. (No, he doesn’t choose among these options. He eats them all, according to the Post.)

Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of coffee. One five-egg omelet. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread. Energy drinks packing 1,000 calories.

Dinner: One pound of pasta. An entire pizza. More energy drinks.

I fvckin laughed out loud when I saw that this morning. He reminded of every newb on this site when they quoted him saying "I eat pretty much whatever I want. I don't have a strict diet. It's all about cramming in as many calories into my system as I possibly can. To be honest with you, I have a tough time keeping weight on."

i can see it. swimming is some of the best cardio out there. it works almost all your muscles, your heart, lungs and if hes training it for 30 hours a week!! think about you and your cardio... you do what.. like maybe 4-6 hours a week total of cardio (on average) try doing 30 hours a week of cardio and see how hard it is for you to keep weight on!! after that you will be able to eat anything.

Overload of B-12.... speeding up metabolism...... hmmmm...... maybe we can start a rumor that he injects 5000mcg B-12 everyday........

  19. #19
Its a strategy! this way competitors will try to copy him and eat 12,000 calories too, then they get fat and slow in swiming. LMAO!!

I bet he needs to eat calorie dense food just to not shrivel to nothing. Swimming beats the crap out of me, I cant imagine doing it as much as him.

I actually read an article about this a few years ago after the last olympics, it was in Mens Health and Fitness I think....And yeah 12,000 is wayyy over-estimating. But, at the time his dietician had instructed him, based on the insane number of calories he burns swimming and his extremely large frame, to get around 8,000 cal a day and to eat absolutely ANTYHING he could get his hands on.....Made me very jealous and angry at the time, lol. He said he rarely hits his target and usually starts to get stuffed around 6 or 7. I dont think he has any reason to lie about it per se, but he is definately over-estimating with 12,000, thats just not realistic on a day to day basis.....ask Duk, I did like 8,000 on Sat (Not all of it from healthy sources I might add ) and I felt like I was pregnant for half the night.

Very, very true....Im sitting there watching him race heat after heat and final after final and of course breaking a world record in almost every race. And he's doing it several times a day and back to back days...Im thinking when does this guy sleep and how is he doing this interview right now without passing out.

The sick thing is they say this is the cleanest event ever,LOL.

Sick thing with gene doping it will never be able to detect it,as its your genes.thats why he is cocky about being tested,he is like test me.test me as many times as you want.

They had a segment on NBC on monday night with BOB Costas about Phelps's diet. Apparently the guy doest know how to cook, so he eats all his meals out. They sent camera crews to all the restaurants in his home town and interviewed the people that worked there. They all listed everything he gets usually.

Imagine how much money it would take a week to eat that amount of food. Now imagine how expensive it is to eat all your meals like this in restaurants. you're talking about $30-50 per meal. How much do professional swimmers make?

I would have thought athletes like Phelps would have world class dietitian's watching over eveything he ever put into his body. Lol and for that matter World Class Labs.

I used to see him out a lot a couple years ago when I was still in school at U of M. Come to think of it, I don't even think he was 21 yet or he must have just turned 21. One of my friends swam for Michigan also so I would see them all frequently.

If he really consumes that much junk food he has to spend a lot of time on the toilet. Even when I'm eating 2,500 cals of clean food I poop a lot.

Its here dude,on one of the past shows we had a elite Dr on nutrition who personally knew athletes who have done it.Im looking at the Des (1-3) gene,
    Des (1-3) IGF-1 is over 20 times (2000%) more anabolic than IGF-1.
Des (1-3) is so potent is its unique ability to fit into lactic acid altered IGF-1 receptor sites. (YUP) When we train we burn carbohydrates as a fuel to make cellular ATP. When cells switch to this ATP pathway, the by-product is Lactic Acid. This is of course the cause of most of the burn we feel during intense or higher rep sets. Well, the lactic acid build-up is called acidosis, and it destroys the shape of some receptor-sites for period of time, well to cut it short, you get doped with des 1-3 its game over.
