    On a serious note.

With many med degrees you are given a green card more or less, that also goes for many other professional fields.

What I don´t understand is why the government does not allow the same for none skilled labor jobs.

What I mean is lets say if a hospital needs a certain skilled labor, well if that person can not be found or that hospital has to hire outside the US due to the lack of people with that skilled labor then there is a way to bring in persons from the outside. Hence why so many medical professionals are from middle east or India or __________.

If a company is looking for apple pickers and no one wants to do that job or no one can be found then why can´t the farmer go outside and use the same principle. This is not applicable in the Great Recession but could should it be applicable in other times.

I have several friends from South America, both with advanced science degrees. Through school they could not legally work off campus, they were here on student visas. On the day they graduated they had 6 months to leave the country or apply for a work visa. The problems was that they couldnt apply for a work visa until after they had completed their educations, there was a back log of over 2 years for work visa applications. Fortunately for one they got married in the time after graduation. The other one disappeared because they faced deportation. The Government came looking for them and interviewed several people about their whereabouts. To my knowledge they were never caught. Both had to pay out of state tuition for their graduate education. Which is not cheap at all. Since they were here legally they where not affored the tuition break (in state tuition) that the children of illegal immigrants are in that state. Needless to say they feel that the immigration policy for those who do it legally are unfair.

A very close friend of mine is Vietnamese. He and his family are here legally under asylum since his father worked for the US Army during the Vietnam War. In order for his family to get his oldest brother and his wife and children to come over it took them 7 years and over 10,000 dollars in legal and government fees to get them here. Before they could come the brother had to show that he had a usable skill. He indeed worked in a small machine shop and had some machine working skills. Once here he and everyone that was to work outside the home had to attend mandatory intensive english courses for at least 6 months according to INS.

I have another friend that is Canadian that is going to school here. He can not get cell phone service since he doesnt have a SSN or American Credit. He can not get American Credit because he has no credit history or an American Citizen to co-sign for him. He can only get prepaid cell phone service and department credit cards. He can not legally work here since he is a student and can not receive student loans from the US government. Every time we go out, he has to present his canadian ID and Passport for entry into bars. Yet illegal immigrants can receive drivers license here and do not need to prove immigration status as he does just to drink a beer.
