To address this: I don't really know any other way to make (clean) gains than slowly. Adding muscle mass is not a fast process, with or without gear. It takes years to build up a solid base, especially for somebody like me who didn't start lifting (read: not training) until 33ish.
The times I've tried to add mass quickly, I got fat. Why? Because a) I have a propensity for being overweight. And b) refer to my first sentence.
