Well credit goes far beyond buying things today. Many employers look at credit to qualify a potential hire. Shows how responsible you've been.

Many (almost all major) insurance companies factor credit history for better rates on home/car/etc... insurance.

If you don't have a home, you need credit for an apartment, unless you want to live in the ghetto.

Cell phone service providers require credit checks.

Utility companies now use credit history to determine how much deposit you need to leave.

The list goes on and on.

I personally use credit to gain access to 0% deals on credit cards that give me frequent flyer miles. So in my case, without credit I could never save 1000's per year on flights.

But yeah, having no credit is much better than having bad credit.
~ PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR SOURCE CHECKS ~

I own my own business so luckily I dint have to worry about it affecting my employment.

Haven't heard that about home and auto insurance, I will look into this with my agent, hopefully I'm not over paying.

I own my own home in a nice area

I've had a cell phone with the same company without incident since I was 15

I did have to pay a deposit for electric once, like $500, that was years ago and makes sense that would be based of credit. Fortunately I was able to pay the deposit.

Maybe it's been harder, maybe it's been easier but at the end of the day it worked for me. Its rough to hear stories about this kind of data theft, I'm just tying to protect myself the best I can.
