From what info was released, it looks like he put in some good years, so that's how I'll choose to remember that name

It was again, not surprising that our modern day, dare I call them; journalists, got their wording wrong AGAIN; being LATE is obviously AWOL status, but how I always understood the UCMJ, after 30 days you are declared a deserter, NOT fucking AWOL after several years of absence...
Furthermore, nowadays, with the mechanisms of control in place, once you go to deserter status, you can't be stopped by the police or receive/renew a passport without popping up on their screens. After 9/11 the govt. implemented the so called Criminal Watchlist, and a deserter is automatically on that list with a warrant for arrest. Most likely, he had a valid passport when he skated out...
Interesting.
Edit: One perspective. I couldn't find the podcast so it's a YouTube link. Worth listening to, IMHO. You may have to jump forward some to hear about special warfare operator "Dan Swift".

There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...
