We didn't have effective birth control until 20th century, meaning that we're wired to think it would be bad idea for a woman to have a kid with a man that wouldn't provide for her. Which was true back then, but now that we have contraception, women can do whatever.
Also, it's only human to adjust in small steps. That's why the elderly (both male and female) still frown upon women with multiple partners.
I, too, was raised with a similar mindset and for a long time (21y) I wanted to have a partner for life. Now I just lol at the idea of having done the necessary compromises to keep my first partner. It would have been miserable.
