14 year old brother wants 2 workout.
hey guys i know theres other forums to post this in but im just curious on something. my little brother (14) has been calling me and im'n me asking if it would be ok for him to join a gym. my opinion would probably be no, because of things ive heard about stunting your growth. hes a small kid, 5'2" about 105lbs. i just recently read an article tho that it was good and promoted overall growth if you worked out your legs at that age. he likes to play baseball so obviously i wouldnt want him to try to bulk to much either way upper body. i might even work with him for a little bit in the gym if he does join, i would want him to know proper mechanics and stuff to know.. what is the truth behind all of this? let me know guys.. thanks

make sure you show him correct form for everything, you dont want it on your hands that he screwd himself over in the long run by doing dumb stuff...

My kid is 11 and is starting puberty and he works out occasionally with me (about once a week). He does it more for fun than anything else, he's not really interested in working out regularely... though he is athletic (soccer, hockey, swim team).
I am ok with it... I supervise him like a hawk, and keep ALL his weights low. I won't allow weights heavy enough to work out to low-rep failure. I keep it light but high rep for him.
Phatmark if your little bro wants to work out, you may want to supervise him and work out with him for a while. At least until he "gets it". Remember that a 14 year old can be very impressionable and the gym isn't always the best place for a kid to learn whats "normal".

I started lifting when I was around that age, and I'm happy I did.

I wouldve paid money at that age for someone to show me what to do.......if i had money at that age. But i went like once or twice a week with my friends and we basically dicked around and didnt really know wtf we were doing. Make sure you teach him form and good workout routine and why he should only do basic movements with freeweights at that age.
