Survival (who here knows how to survive off the land?)

well the title says it all......ive started watching the new series Revoloution and it got me to thinking, if shit hit the fan, in any post apocolyptic scenerio...........id be dead within a week!

i have no idea how to navigate, hunt, find water, build a shelter etc etc

anyone on here know basic survival? anyone advanced?

anyone a doomsday preper?

im actually looking into attending some survival courses and im going to learn how to fish.......

Lernt a little when i was in the army. Nav, survival,field craft etc. when i was a kid we use too cull kangaroos and sell there meat for dog food and there skins for rugs and such.Not pretty when you hang them up to drain out.

If the post apocolyptic scenario came in to play, wouldn't you already be dead? Isn't that what happens in the end of the world?

By the way, that's kind of sad that you never went fishing with your dad as a kid. Or hunting either for that matter. Things like that are stuff boys are supposed to learn growing up. As far as building shelter goes, it's not as difficult as you might think it is.

If I wanted to swim off the coast of Scotland I've learnt all I need to do is make a wet suit out of a seal and cover the rest of my body in the fat of the seal that I boil up...

I feel very confident in my survival skills.I have very large supply of guns,ammo, archery equipment, and camping equipment. I was raised on a farm so the gardening, food storage,meat processing is no problem.

actually ive been fishing 3 times when i was a kid, cant remember much to be fair........i dont find it sad though. never hunted anything in my life and that doesnt make me sad either..........

I have been and avid hunter and fisherman from birth, I have further survival training through my service in the Corps, I have building and mechanic skills from previous employment, I hone my markesman ships skill regularly. I honestly can not imagine a scenario that I couldnt survive....motha fuker I'm awesome lol

I would not be worried at all if the shit hit the fan however I doubt it will happen and I am by no means preparing for the doomsday. I simply enjoy a life close to the dirt.

I've had "some" survival training. But not local geographically.

The MOST important thing to have is weapons. Otherwise, there will be those that will help themselves to whatever you have.

I think most believe they could survive because of hunting/trapping or military skills gained over the years.

But honestly the simple cold/flu and or infections would take out the vast majority of us.
The bacteria and viruses we have now are WAY stronger then those from a century ago. So without proper antibiotics most would simply die off.

Its also very doubtful that the big guys would survive seeming how you would no longer be able to support all that muscle.
So their bodies would deteriorate the fastest leaving them weak with weaken immune systems and more pron to for mentioned illnesses.

Ive been an avid hunter and outdoorsman all my life. I have camped in tents, tarps, bivy's, homemade shelters of various kinds. I have done this in every season including the winter.

The idea of survival has always been a keen interest with me - from building forts as a kid, to building them as an adult for survival. I have also successfully completed a 7 day Advanced Winter Survival course that took place in the boreal forest in Northern Ontario Canada where the temps were - 28C. Part of the requirements was that you were given a buck saw and allowed only enough food that would fit into a large 16oz sized coffee can - so your choices better be wise..ie high calorie. You could have all the clothing you could carry on your back. And you were allowed snare wire and some lashing. Thats it! Then you were instructed to build your own shelter that you live in for 7 days using only the tools provided - a buck saw.

You were then required every morning to attend daily courses on trapping, fire starting, water sources, navigation, hypothermia, ect. One of the daily challenges was to navigate through the thickest forest imaginable and the deepest snow, from a point of drop off by vehicle miles away. It took over 5 hours to travel 3.5 kilometers.

I was the only one who successfully snared 3 Eastern Cottontails and 1 European Hare. (we dont have rabbits).

Over the years ive logged more dirt time than most guys i know. Not only in the summer months, but the winter months too. I winter camp every year (except this year due to back flare up) I have a custom made hot tent with custom made stove and piping. I have a traditional Pulk for pulling my gear through the deep snow. All my snowshoes are traditional as well. I do have one pair that i sent away to the East coast to have them restrung with 400lb fishing line. Greatest thing since sliced bread! No slush or snow sticks to the webbing. I have an entire room dedicated to outdoor gear. You name it, i have it.

Over the years Ive trained and taught myself most of the key topics of survival. And i spend every year during each season perfecting my ability to sustain my self with the least amount of gear. I have a small naglene container that i take with me each time i enter the forest. if i had to, i could survive relatively comfortable with the contents of a 500ml container.

Also, I used to make survival kits and small stove kits and sell them years ago to friends and folks i got to know off some of the outdoor sites i belong too. This when Tinny made the penny stove famous and everyone was jumping on the bandwagon. But i juts made mine for fun and charged enough to recoup my costs. I still have a could of them lying around. Perhaps i will take a photo or two of the stove kit and survival kit and show you guys. Maybe you'll get some ideas.

Anyway, im very confident i would survive.

p.s. big fan of Dave Canterbury. i spoke to him several time on the phone. I got to know him waaay before he was approached for Dual Survivor. I actually predicted, and told him so on the phone, he would have a show if he continued down the road he was headed on YouTube. he's real down to earth family guy.

I'm not preparing for doomsday or the zombie apocalypse or anything, but I do keep enough supplies stashed to weather a few weeks here if SHTF and the gov't was no help. I wouldn't have to start really "surviving" until I had to leave here, either because of my emergency supplies drying up or being forced out for other reasons. For that I do keep a bug out bag packed at all times next to the door, and I have an evacuation and long-term bug out plan to a nearby place where natural resources are more available. Yeah, I can fish and hunt and purify water and build shelters, but that's a last resort!

It's really amusing (and maybe a little scary) to go to some of these prepper sites and read some of the threads there. There's guys with like 5k rounds of ammo and a camo painted AK, but no way to make clean water lol.

However, this thread had me wondering how long I could actually survive out there if worst came to worst. Yeah, I'd be just fine if I had a bear minimum amount of camping equipment , my .308 with a fair amount of ammo, and cold weather gear. But, you pull any of those out from under me and my chances of survival diminish. Well, until I shot one of you assholes and stole all of your stuff. ; )
