AGREED!!!!!! Ya know on a side note, I bet ole CLiff is rolling over in his grave at what happened with Metallica. I know they've made it big, but I LOVED everything they did up until that black album.

I saw you mention Van Halen above....disagree there big time, might as well throw in Peter Framton....sorry,don't like van halen except for a few very old ones.

Yeah, I'm older, I just refuse to grow up

I'm not a huge Van Halen fan, but I admire the cutting edge work he did up through 1984. I WAS a big VH fan back then, but in my day, if you didn't have a VH concert jersey you didn't get laid. Just the way it was.

Cliff Burton is not even close IMO. Have you ever heard Victor Wooten. That guy is amazing. I'm a bass player myself, and I can play anything that Burton played, but I wouldn't even attempt to play Wooten's stuff. He has CD's that are nothing but him playing bass. He's unbelievable.

I'm suprised Megadeth didn't do better than they did. They had it going there for a while, then just kinda fizzled. "Peace Sells but who's Buying" is one of my all time favorites.

Yeah, that's out there. Burton just did some stuff with a bass that's really wild. Listen to Ride the Lightning, a LOT of what most people think is guitar is actually bass.

Billy Sheenan ring a bell? Considering his genre, he was hard to keep up with.

I thought Keith Richards was dead? Oh wait, my bad, he just LOOKS dead. Hehe.

Ok last post for tonight, I'll leave yaz with a few names to chew on.

    Vivian Cambell-Dio
    Tom Sholsz (SP?)-Boston
Dude from Night Ranger...can't remember his name, but listen to "Still rock in America".
Sammy Hagar-love him or hate him, he was a guitarist from hell.

And the last, the best, the most TALENTED band ever to take the stage....
RUSH. You have to see these guys live to appreciate how much music 3 guys can make, and never miss a note.

    Nighty night,

Burton's stuff is pretty easy to play though. I'm a technical type of person, so I usually judge talent by difficulty instead of artistic value.

bella fleck is a great bassist.

but no one knows who mark knopfler is? The guitarist for dire straits? His technical skill is amazing. All of you download sultans of swing immediately.

Without a doubt Yngwie Malmsteen is king...

I saw him perform so many times and he always
amazed you live as much as the produced tracks...

    1) Yngwie Malmsteen ( Must have sold his soul like Niccolo Paganini)
    2) Eddie Vanhalen ( Influence a whole generation)
    3) Vinny Moore ( Vinny's a local boy gotta put him 3rd )
    4) Al Di Meola ( I probably spelled his name wrong) ( Vinny's influence)
    5) David Gilmour ( You're dead on He is incrediable too)
    6) Paul Gilbert ( This guy was Insane good!!)
    7) Randy Rhoads
    8) Jason Becker/Marty Friedman (these 2 were best when together)
    9) Tony Macalpine
    10) Jeff Beck

So many great players back in the day... What happend to them
I can't think of one guy on the scene now that would make my top 20

    Skill wise, I would say:

    1) Yngwie Malmsteen
    2) Rusty Cooley
    3) Jimmi Page

My favorite though would have to be:

    David Gilmour

    What about you?¿

For pure shred it's tough to beat Yngwie but outside of a few songs most of his stuff is just masturbating the instrument. There is a line between technical ability and ability to play something that people want to listen to. Dimebag hits that line the best. Not to mention he never misses a note in concert no matter how blasted he is on booze. He and Vinny formed Damageplan in the wake of Pantera's demise. Sounds great. After that last Pantera album a change isn't necesarily the worst thing ever.

No way........... Ryan Martini of Mudvayne has to be one of the best base player. He's unreal to watch live, and fast.

sachman satriani is certainly the most talented and his student steve Vai is good as well.

let us not forget eddie van halen
but for nderstanding that the soul of the music is in the base - Angus of ACDC

I was just getting ready to throw that info. out there.
Satriani is my fav. I love the solo "always you/always me" and "I believe"
If anyone wants to sample Steve Vai's talent just rent the movie crossroads
with Ralph machio.Old movie but all the guitar in the film is all Steve. At the end it shows a battle of good and evil Steve Vai as himself versus machio it's cool as hell and really shows you what Steve Vai is capable of.
