    fish oil

I curerntly have an abundance of fish oil, but no flaxseed. Are they essentially the same? Or would I be in the wrong for exchanging the flaxseed in my diet with the fish oil?

They both are to accomplish the same thing. Sufficient EFA's, you are fine.

why not use both flax and fish oil?

If I remember right fishoil is higher in omega 3 and lower in omega 6 then flaxoil and since the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 should idealy be 3:1(also not to sure if I remember this ratio right)for max health benefits then using both would seem like a good idea

to get the benefits of omega 3's, your body has to convert it to EPA/DHA. The conversion of flax oil in your body is roughly 5%. Fish oil is already loaded with epa/dha. it has a higher content as well. if you ask me, i'd utilize both in my diet.

Try the reference section here and look up flax and fish oil to see the difference: www.wholehealthmd.com

also some notes on their page about fish oil:

    Special tips:

--To prevent side effects such as belching and flatulence, avoid taking the entire dose at one time. Try splitting a 3,000 mg daily dose into three 1,000 mg doses, and take throughout the day with meals.

--Side effects vary depending on the brand, so if you have trouble tolerating one fish oil supplement, try switching to another brand.

--Don't buy cod liver oil as a source of omega-3s; the high amounts of vitamins A and D contained in these supplements can be toxic.
Take fish oil supplements with meals.

Fish oil supplements can rapidly go rancid; store the pills in the refrigerator and avoid buying them in bulk.

Also a side note, they can contain mercury. If you are already eating 3-4 portions of fish per week including cans of tuna then probably not needed to supplement. Keep in mind the fiber if you ground whole flax seeds is also very beneficial. There are many benefits also listed on those web pages.
