If you're having pain in your kidney, you need to see a doctor and get a sonogram and or a biopsy and not worry about your water intake until you know you don't have some kind of kidney damage.

A biopsy? That's a little severe for some pain, isn't it? I could understand if the pain was incapacitating, but since he's able to write on this board, I'm guessing it's not that severe.

Yes, a biopsy may still be needed. A person usually doesn't get physical pain in the kidney until it is completely dead and starting to be broken down by the body. I kinda doubt it's actually kidney pain at all, but if it is, he should get to a doctor and let them decide if a biopsy is needed after getting an ultrasound done.
