Squeezing your butt cheeks together for bigger bench #s?

I was at my gym yesterday and I overheard a conversation between a personal trainer and a college football player. The football player said that his trainer at school told him that if he squeezes his butt cheeks together while he is benching it will make him lift more. Then he goes on to say that his bench has went up like 15 pounds in 2 weeks because of that. Anybody EVER heard of this or is this one of those everybody already knows but me kind of things.

It's probably because when you "squeeze" or flex your butt cheeks, your hips will elevate causing you to bench more, other than that, it make no sense!

Maybe this was a weird way of saying to drive with your legs when you are benching.
