Whats up everybody... The doc. put me on Paxil, 20mg / day. He said it would take a few weeks for anything to change. He said the reason for feeling down had something to do with my seratonin level being pretty low. I have to go back in a month for him to check the seratonin level to see if a dose adjustment is needed. Anyway, hope it works. Thanks everyone, - Henry

    Depression

A few comments from personal experience. I let it get to a quite serious point, time off work and medication. If the condition is serious enough to require medication (usually an SSRI - look that up yourself if interested), be alerted that the symptoms may increase while the medication takes effect and this could take up to two weeks.
But there are many things that can be the cause, one of them is hypothroidism (low thyroid function), easily treated. And that is why a visit to your GP is essential.

I would definitely suggest having your thyroid checked. In my experience, even IF you have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism unless your TSH is off the charts, they will not help you. I was on 10mg/ed of Sarafem for PMS (same as prozac really) and I quit taking it because I thought maybe it was prohibiting me from reaching my goals. As far as Paxil is concerned, as a woman, I would NEVER take that drug. It is notorious for causing weight gain so in case you are an "easy gainer" i would take that in mind. Wellbutrin is the opposite -- notorious for weight loss in patients who take it.
Overall, st johns wort is cost effective, no sides that I know of, and it does help.

    Good luck!

Quad do you know where I could go to find the studies that say Paxil makes you gain weight? I'm interested, because that could be one of my problems that I don't lose even though I am doing cardio up the ass !!!

    ok a few ?s:
    a) have you had your thyroid tested?
    b) have you talked to your doc about other antidepressants?
    c) how long have you been taking it?

i'll be right back with a "source" so that you can see it in print.

ok i'm back. here you go:http://www.prozactruth.com/paxil.htm

I knew this also because my doctor and I were trying to eliminate potential sources of weight gain (15 lbs) and she said that she would only give Paxil to the patient that is depressed and suffering from weight loss. Good information on that site. I don't miss the Sarafem/prozac one bit.
