What resolution to make high quality divx?
I have recently come into the habit of ripping dvd's to my computer. I have the divx pro codecs but I was wondering what resolution I should rip them at so they are very high quality? I am very ignorant as to this subject so I appreciate your help. My desktop resolution is at 1600x1200. thanks in advance.

umm dont compress them and leave em as 4.6gb files? it doesnt matter what resolution you put them at either, it retains same quality over all resolutions. go with 800x600 i suppose.

well, if I dont compress them my hard drive will become very full very fast. Also, I would like to save them to cd's when I'm finished burning them. but you think 800x600 is a good res to use? thanks for the quick reply bro i appreciate it

well it's gonna take 2 cd's with all the extra crap that Nero adds in.
back when i was doing it (2001) - there was a program that would rip the DVD to your hard drive. then you specify some other settings. ****, i can't even remember it all now that i just use my DVD burner.
i'll search around......

the problem with that 700mb single disc is that the program will actually reduce quality of the movie to make it fit, you wont get a rip of an entire movie for divx thats that low in file size. you probably wont notice a big difference on your pc, but try watching it on a 52" and you will see it in a heartbeat.

also, I should specify that I do not own a tv so these movies will all be watched on my 19" pc monitor.

i use main concept mpeg converter and you can take a divx movie and convert it back to mpeg and not lose any quality. The thing is you have to get the movie in a good quality. Xvid is the best it is dvd clear. I can take a xvid movie and burn it to dvd and you can't tell if is factory or not.
