Yeah that's a possibility......he kind of gave up MX for football......it was hard to stay healthy riding the bikes.....always a sprained ankle or something.....plus the coach would get mad when he'd miss a game because of a dirt bike ding.....

Think I'll keep him on the field and in the wieght room....plus he has track after football.....the more sports the better......

HEY BROS.....thanks for all the input!!!

    ITs those dang Canadian drivers....

I have a close friend who had been riding bikes his whole life. Dirt and street. Well, one day driving his bike on the street this lady pulled out in front of him and now he doesnt have the use of his left arm.....

It just goes to show u it can happen at any age, but at 17 im sure hes not mature enough to ride one responsibly 100% of the time. And even if he does hes still at risk of that lady not seeing him and plowing him down. Just tell him what my dad told me when i asked him for a motorcycle.....Not while ur under my roof....

You must also take into account that a dirtbike does not even compare to a streetbike like a Yamaha R6 or an R1.

    Bad idea......

My prob was I tried to use my dirt skills on the road....we'll you can guess what happened. I'm now 25 and on my 4th bike. IMO please DO NOT get him a bike any higher than a 600cc machine. I own the current cream of the crop ZX10R kawi and this bike is one bad ass SOB, and not for the faint at heart. Also, I just wanted to add, true you cannot protect him forever, but I honestly think 17 is way to young to own a 160+mph streetbike.
good advice. anything above 600cc would be bad. buy him some gear too. i got my first bike becuase i had friends that were into stunting. i don't stunt now, nor do i ride fast...i'm 29, married, with two kids. can't afford to go 150mph anymore. teach him the bad **** that can happen if he acts foolish. then take the binky out his mouth...i'm sure your heart will be in your throat...good luck in your decision!

Don't get your kid a street bike at 17 unless you're willing to live with it if he kills himself. And I think the lighter 600's are really more dangerous than the larger bikes. I've ridden most of them, and i currently have a Kawasaki ZZR1200. it has more HP, but because its heavier it takes away some of the temptation of weaving in/out of traffic or taking the turns too quickly. IMO though, its not worth having to live knowing you bought your kid a motorcycle that he killed himself on.

If you decide to do it, get him the right riding gear (as previously mentioned). leather is best. And buy him some track time. There are a lot of tracks that offer instruction. It will teach him a lot of respect for the machine, and give him a place to go fast in a safer environment.
