bodybuilding game
Hey guys, last year I mentioned something to a guy I work with about making a bodybuilding game. He thought that was a good idea and started making it. But he quit because he didn't have the right software or whatever, I'm not sure. Anyways, I brought up the idea again, this time he said that he has connections with some people, and they may actually make it. But here's the deelio, he said that there's a gotta be a sh!t load of people wanting to buy it. So if I can get enough people to vote saying that they will buy it, then we may be seeing a bodybuilding game in the near future.

Maybe like a power lifting game.

It would be like a sims game. You may start out with a sh!tty job, then work your way up. As your pay goes up, you can go to better gyms, pay off supplements, stuff like that. You'll get to customize your own bodybuilder. Cheat codes for gear. I guess it would be kinda like Vbb and sims.

i hope its like a street fighter kinda game but you lift before you fight ! and have pose down special abilities!

ooo the weightlifting part would be most fun!
you could like, tap the x button really fast and the faster you tap it the more hardcorps your lift, but you'd like i dunno, have to hold the analogue stick in a certain position otherwise your form will be off and you'll get less swole.
they could come up with like a power glove but with an fiber optic syringe/ass kit where you'd have to gear up and make sure to aspirate properly otherwise you hit a digivein, get sick and lose training days and get less swole.
oh yeah and what if you have to use the stick to put tanner on really smoothly and evenly otherwise you look like king kamali and look less swull.
**** i wish i'd voted "yes" now...

Yeah thats why I said a power lifting game would be cool. You could sit there like an idiot and tap the controller try to jack the weight up like the Test Your Might in Mortal Kombat.

I'd suggest releasing a demo/beta version, also make it open source. See how it pans out over a few months, look at the interest it has generated, the costs etc and take it from there.

Yeah but there has to be a bunch of people interested before we can send out a demo version. The powerlifting idea was pretty cool. Maybe it will be included. Where you can customize your own bodybuilder and/or powerlifter. I don't know, I need some more ideas. What do you guys think?

I assume you realise it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop, market and distribute a game? If we're basing it on "the sims" which you mentioned earlier.
I personally believe you'll realise this soon, and that you are biting off more than you can chew.
You need a business plan, people buy people so you need presentation -thats why you need to have a plan, the resources, the time and the money.
Sorry to say, but i dont think this game will ever lift off.

Your best hope is to come up with something like VBB.
I wish you the best of luck, and i dont mean to sound harsh, but, it aint gonna happen mate.

Thanks for the advice Messy.I guess I didn't quite think this through. I'll mention this to my co-worker that has the supposedly connections with microsoft.

The closest thing I've ever seen to a BB game is GTA:San Andreas where you go to the gym and do some basic excersizes to get jacked.
-

i would prolly buy it depending on several factors. 1) it being cheap enough. 2) how much is in it. Like if you worked your way up through the ranks, got to sign contracts with supplement companys, got to juice, buy your juice, different juice has different effects, Face off against Ronnie, Jay, and all the pros. The lifting weights would have to be fun and in depth. Be able to customize your bodybuilder, and then perform different poses and such in the compition. IF it was something like that i would prolly pay 15-25 bucks for it but not any more.
Haha maybe you could even talk sh!t to the other bodybuilders and have a case off "roid rage " and then beat up King Kamali or something.

Sorry I haven't updated you guys yet. I haven't worked with that guy this week yet. So I should be able to update sometime later this week. Messy, the next time I work with him, I'll let ya know.

Yeah, Messy has some really good points. Nowadays it costs several million to get a decent game produced, marketed, and shipped. But that's talking about triple A XBox/PS2/GameCube product created by a team of 30+ for about 2-4 years.
Knowing someone at Microsoft is better than nothing, but no guarantee of anything. As far as publishers go, there's a bit of a question mark concerning what the next generation of games will look like, how they'll play, and most important how much money and resources will be required to develop them. They're even less quick to fork over cash as a result. I just finished working on a tech demo with a very prominent, highly connected group of people who had a strong track record and years of experience. They have been trying to pitch a game for a while, but publishers just aren't biting unless you're well established and ready to hit the ground running.
If you set your sites lower within the garage developer casual game arena ( think Bejeweled and such ), you'll still have quite a can of worms to deal with. It will still take a long time to create art and code for a game, more time to beta-test it to make sure it plays well on various computers and runs bug-free, and still more time to sell and market the product.
None of what I said is meant to convince you not to work on it. I honestly believe it is possible to get it done in your free time and create something that isn't destined to be a total failure as some would have you believe, but it's going to be a sh!tload of work, and it will take you a very long time to do it. Especially without experience. The fact that you want the game to sell well, but it involves taboo subject matter, will most likely require some design finesse when adding AAS into the picture. The space marines in Starcraft got away with injecting "Stim packs". Maybe you can come up with a playful moniker that won't set soccer moms into a frenzy.
Bottom line, you need to ask and answer a lot of questions before you begin. A few worth mentioning for starters:
Do you have a 2d and/or 3d game engine available to work with? If not, are you going to make your own, or purchase one that's already made for a fee and learn how it works?
Do you have all of the 2d or 3d art software that you need to create assets for the game? ( ie. Photoshop, 3dsmax, or cheaper freeware/shareware alternatives ) What does it take to get content from these programs into the engine you use?
Have you looked through books in stores and website articles to understand as much as you can about the game development process? ( www.gamasutra.com , www.gamedev.net , www.flipcode.com )
Do you have the spare time available to get it done? Do you have the motivation to see the project through to completion, and beyond?
Etc, etc...
Good luck man. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a pm.

The game could start of something like the sims...
You build your character an "Average Joe/Jane" per se with stats such as : Strength, Charisma, Endurance, Agility, etc...
In this game you would live a full life with job, women, eating ( Yor typical day is his typical day) Your trying to become bigger / faster bcs you wanna become a profesional Athlete (Football, Power lifting, baseball, track, contest, etc...) and build your character according to what ur sport needs.
You have a couple neighbourhoods containing...
The gym : Multi-Floor building... you need different "memberships" for each floor, each floor has better machines, heavier weight, etc... Also has boxing ring and other sh*t you need.
The lane behind the gym : Where a bro offers you steroids when u walk by and u make a choice to use or not!
Market : Different stores that sell Health Foods, Junk Food, Suppliments, clothing, training equip, etc...
Your house and other houses (friends, people you dont know, etc...)
Bar / Club : Your choice to go or not depending on ur goals!
AND MUCH MORE!!!...
You could enter competitions, get endorsments, etc, etc...
You get the point I could help ya if u want im good at creating things like this but I dont know if you would get it off the gound it would be hard...

I'm a gamer. But I only play games with violence. I wouldn't buy a bb game. Sorry bro.

im a gamer and i play all types of crap and this game would never work...think about it, even if you got all in depth with nutrition and all that crap it would be the most boring game ever to the average gamer. The gym part i gotta agree it would prob be nothin but button tapping and if u wanna get into the stuff wit facing off wit jay and ronnie you gotta pay them for liscensing and likeness rights which would suck. This game was doomed before bulldawg even thought about it
Oh yeah, and think if the average guy who works out in the gym doesn't wanna research everything and do it right for himself what makes u think he's gonna do it all for a game. Unless the game sort of teaches you the art of BB, in which case I still doubt it has a possibility of becoming an idea in a developers head instead of extra waste in his trash can.Last edited by mushroomstampr; 04-13-2005 at 03:56 PM.
