permanent knee disolation, torn ACL, arthritis
these are the problems with my friend's knee. She is exrememly athletic - baseball, hockey, figure skating, dance, etc and hse is only 18 years old.
ANyway she says that she doesnt want the knee to stop her from participating i nteh sports and she is going tobe back in baseball come this season and probably into gymnastics as well.
However, i am advising her against doing all those things without gtting her knee corrected... surgery may be required...
i am not sure about th extent of her injuries what do you think i could tell her to change her mind before she detroys her knee furhter?
I mean i am all for her playing sports... dont get me wrong... but couldnt running about in basball and such worsen the state of her knee?

Is it a KNEE dislocation as in dislocation of the entire femoral-tibial connection? Or do you mean a patella dislocation?

OK well I am going to assume patella dislocation. This injury is more common in females than males and happens generally in with the patella dislocating laterally. If this is the case with her than she must have gone through physiotherapy after months of immobility. This will re-build the quadricep and hamstring muscles but will never completely repair the joint as bone rubs away and ligaments are never as strong as they first were. She will continue to dislocate it and it will become more frequent with each dislocation as it gets easier and easier to dislocate. This being said does she need surgery? Well that will be up to her knee specialist, in a lot of cases surgery cannot guarantee improving anything.
I have dislocated my left patella three times playing hockey and soccer, this is part of the reason I turned to lifting, because I can no longer play sports without an easy dislocation, this is also another reason why my legs are no where near the proportion of my upper body. It is a horrible thing to have happen and bothers me both physically and emotionally but hey shit happens.
At best I would suggest your friend see a knee specialist and for the time being if she wants to continue to play sports she should pick up a knee brace. She doesnt need a big fancy one, you can get some that look just like a sock but with two open ends obviously and you just slide it up over your knee, when looking for one of these be sure to get one that has either a built in patella support piece or a removable one. I have the removeable one, it attaches by velcro to the inside and is horseshoe shaped as to "cup" the patella and add extra stability. Good luck to her.
