hey military, law enforce, firemen, etc

most of these fields require some sort of physical test that needs to be passed. usually a running test, pushup or bench press requirement and then often i hear people say a situp requirement whats up with that?? wouldnt a squat requirement make more sense instead??

Well, I'm a firefighter, and I can tell you that the physical test that I had to take in my area was a joke. They gave us 7 minutes to do it, and the test consisted of running up 4 flights of stair wearing a 40 lb lead filled jacket, helmet, gloves, with a 40 or 50 lb hose roll over your shoulder, then when you get to the top you have to hoist another 40 or 50 lb hose roll up the side of the building and in the window. After that, you run down the outside fire escape and you have to hit this lead weight on a track with a rubber hammer and get it to a certain distance. Then you carry a charged hoseline over your shoulder for about 100 ft. or so and set it down, then last you have to either carry or drag this 170 lb dummy another 100 ft. and your done. I'll tell you how pathetic it was, they even had a nylon strap that you had the option of using to drag the dummy(yeah right, like your going to do that in a real rescue situation!! and most people are fatass 300lb people and not no 170 lbs!!!) Anyways, we had a whole 7 minutes to do all of this shit, I completed it in 2 minutes, 35 seconds. If you couldnt accomplish all of that in 7 minutes you were a real ****ing pussy, that's all I have to say. In my honest opinion, half of the people who were in my recruit class shouldn't have even been there. But when your done with all the training and bullshit, I will say that you have one of the coolest jobs in the world.

ill have to agree to dissagree with you on some of your points. the tests our daysin my part of the world were only tough if you didnt prepare for them. some of the testing was demanding, not really lengthy but the hose running saw many fit boxers weightlifters etc, just because they didnt expect the kind of work out and the difficulty with wearing the kit.
they scrapped that now and have decided its not job specific to hose running. dont ask me why. yeah we dont run out 400m of 70mm fire hose real ofter but its nice to know you can if you need to. i lost count how many miles of the hoses i ran out during my 17 week training course which is now going to be down to 6 weeks

the rest of the tests are a piss easy.
    well they were

as for the coolest job in the world, i hear how people who are firefighters are hailed as heores in the US, but in the uk were seen as lazzy overpaid losers. hence the reason many of the wowrking class do not believe we should be aloud to sleep during a 15 hour night shift, hence the reason our beds have gone. its all down to the govornemnt in power tho. theres 50 000 votes labour wont be getting next election.

all i can say. if you are thinking of the fire department, go to your local station, try a set of fire gear on. do a little bit of running round with a hose under your arm, then you will be able to base y9our training round it. trust me road work and just going to the gym wont prepare you well enough. just go and get the feeling of what will be expected.

    best of luck

I'm a firefighter in Montreal and here there are 2 physical tests...

1st is the dreaded "beep test" (running back and forth between 2 lines in a set time over and over, faster and faster)

The best candidates in the first test move on to the second one...

It's a timed race in full bunker gear +50 lbs vest

You got stairs with hose packs, pulling charged lines, rolling 4in and putting it on top of hose bed, sledge hammer test, obstacle course with hose packs, pike-pole work, raising ladders, finding a man-down in a maze (blindfolded), finding and pulling out a victim in a maze (blindfolded + collapse type obstables) and after that you have to correctly perform CPR flawlessly.

Any error in technique gets you time penalties.

Check with your local fire dept for requirements, they vary greatly.
