Motivation just gone :(
Been like this for over a year now. I enjoy to workout when I get to the gym but the fire isnt there anymore. I dont long for each workout as I used to and often it feels like a hazzle just to get to the gym.
Even during the last 7 weeks when I have made the best gains in years I still dont get that "I cant wait until next workout" feeling.
I guess it might be because I have no one to workout with. It realy makes workouts alot more fun to have someone motivated to hit the weights with.
What do you guys do when the urge isnt there anymore?
Maby Im getting "old" and getting other priorities

yeah you get like that...
the older you get the harder it starts getting.
the longer you need to recover ..
you get sore much quicker.
and you start feeling alittle lazy.
the main thing is you keep going and making your gains .

Totally understand bro. I ate bad the past few days just because I was so damn sick of dieting and cardio and all that crap. Sometimes you just need to take a couple days completely off, pig out, and watch movies all day! haha
Recharge the batteries.

I hear ya man, know exactly what you are going through... I feel that way myself at this point in my life...just burned out and that insane desire to get to the gym every day just isn't there right now.. have to force myself and just hope this frame of mind dissapates..

I'm only 25 and I sometimes go throug periods like this too. I think there are a lot of factors that can cause it; monotony of diet and training and having a repetitive routine for long periods, maybe not being as positive as usual, work, weather (making you lethargic feeling)... I hate that feeling though. Try to stay hopeful that it will pass and the love will come back

Workout Partner
Never have I worked out and been sorry for it (except maybe for the times I've broken bones...jits/wrestling and pulled muscles). But, this is always a feeling I have post workoutlike "Wow, I'm glad I motivated myself to go today."
WHen I've had a good workout partner, the whole situation changes; I want to go to the gym, feel more connected to my plans, and am just plainly more motivated. A good partner, if you can find one, makes a lot of difference in motivation.

This is an intense lifestyle to maintain day in and day out, especially as we get older and have added responsibilities competing for our time and energy. We also grow and develop other interests. Take a vacation from the gym, not exercise, just the gym. Pick up a team sport, or an individual sport where you still have that competitive need fulfilled. Even people who love their work and have a passion for it take a break from it. Unless you are a pro BB don't obsess about missing a week, or a couple of months....find an exercise that you enjoy, or begin lifting different stuff...like kettlebells. If you no longer have the desire to be the "man mountain" thats ok...

I am slightly in that mode right now...i have made alot of good gains recently and and am in the beginning stages of cutting again...i almost did'nt go to the gym yesterday, i thoght how great it would be to sit around all day and go do some other things instead of thinking about what time i will be going to the gym..the shit does get old, especially when your life revolves around it like mine.
I made it to the gym and it was leg day..sonofabitch was it a blessed day...i am all tore up this morning...legs are torn to shit.
I am not sure if i will make it there today...***No source checks!!!***

What got you going in the first place ?
A movie? A girl? A bb video?
Try thinking of the reason that got you started, you still haven't fulfilled it yet....
And pop some ECA for a couple of days!

I am in the same position right now...i can't get motivated for nothing. When i'm on i always say wow i feel so great i look good i'm never going to stop and then once i'm off i slack and can't get into it, and like johan said it sucks not having a training partner because you can't really push yourself the way you would like to. I have to find a training partner! Anybody here workout at the LA Fitness on Marcus avenue in Long Island that needs a training partner?

For me what always helped best was to take 2 weeks off COMPLETLY. I usually do that once or twice a year.
I did not follow a restricted diet
I did not went to the gym.
I only did some recreational cardio..
After that time period i am completly motivated to start again.
Another thing which helps me to stay motivated throughout the year is to change up my training routine completly now and then (besides that this yields better results anyway :-)) This way training dosen't bore me.. and i am always looking forward to the next time period to try out something new or come back to something i haven't done for some time.Last edited by AleX-69; 08-03-2006 at 06:50 AM.

This one is easy. Take two weeks off. I mean no weights no cardio. Eat, drink, be happy. At the end of the two weeks watch Pumping Iron. You will hit the gym like a monster.

yes it is, two weeks off.
Dont even think about the gym.
A good workout partner is invaluable. However, 30% of the time i have no partner so i feel you.
Just keep bangin away, your mood should change.
good luck.

It happens from time to time, we have our ups and downs , highs and lows. I just have small goals that I try to achieve little by little. I'm having fun learning in perpetuity about my body whether it be how it reacts by tweaking diet, training style et cetera.

the thing is it doesnt seem to be a temporary thing either. I have been without any real motivation for over a year now. Taking a few weeks off doesnt realy make a difference, I have done that a couple of times during last year.
Ohh well I guess I just need to get a good training partner and maby get into something else aswell. Back to wrestling or maby some martial art.
Its like muriol said I guess. It gets old when life revolves around it and for alot of years all I did was workout or think about working out

Well priorities change as you grow older indeed but I think we are still young. Im just a couple years older then you and I cant imagine what it would be like when Im in my thirties. Changing gyms might help. Personally I go on vacation 2 times per year and I use that as my motivation even if it's 8-9 months away but like I said we always hit a rut once in a while, having said that we are all different.

Easy! You just need a vacation. Take your old lady on a cruise. You
just might feel like exercising after you see all the lard arse's eating
everything in sight.

maybe in the past you valued certain things, and you had a need to gain that value in your life. so you strived for a while, gained some of the value, but the thing is energy and time are values too. like at work you trade the value 'time' for a superficial value called 'money' money has no real value, just a trusted system of currency. and we have laws to convict those who break that trust.
so what your really doing when you workout is TRADING VALUES. your paying time and energy for health and a nice physique. but as your life changes, the values TIME and ENERGY may become more scarce, thus raising thier actual value. this all exists on a scale of personal values, put these values on thier respected sides. your scale obviously is still tipping towards the HEALTH side because you still workout. But in the past the scale had a steeper slope.
So the question is what do you do. First ask yourself, do my NEEDS justify my VALUES. Another words, are you striving to attain something to a higher degree than you actually value it, maybe just out of habit.
Take a look at the values you innately possess, TIME and ENERGY. If you can make these values more abundant, than you lower thier value and raise the value of HEALTH, etc.
I could be always working out harder, and doing a few extra sets, but my value ENERGY has been low lately. How do i create more of the value ENERGY? I have to sacrifice other values. I have to sacrifice TIME for sleep, the right kind of FOOD, and a million other things that we dont always have so much control over. Like wellbeing, happiness, and our ability to conquer stress. Laziness is also a value. Which is prob more of why im slacking with my routine, because i know in another month im going to be shot back into a busy hectic life, more than full time school, almost fulltime work, gym, try to maintain some sort of social life, so right now my value to be LAZY is through the roof. Because in another month this value wont even be on the market.
Just sit down and think about things using this system, once you get good at it you can figure out exactly why your life is the way it is. It works for me.

evry morning when i get up i whatch the " you are mighty " video all though it has been down the past few days for some reason and i also repeat the words " love it " over and over again. when you wake up at 5am evryday to hitt the weights you need a little boost somedays.

I've also had this. You need to rediscover why you started training in the first place. Take some time out completely if necessary...go back and understand what made you start training, what fired you up and then store those emotions again and learn to feed off them in the gym while every day repleneshing those emotions.
For me there are certain things I see/experience every day that make me angry (like right now I just held a door open for some woman and she just ignored me like I was her personal ****ING door holder!!!) so I'll keep that and remember it when I'm doing my next set of heavy bench or squats....
Hope this helps. Good luck. I've been there and it's not fun!!
