Go with a Sony vaio 13.3in screen.
I don't care what anyone says about Mac being superior, the newest vaio's are insanity.
As far as processor speed, of course there will be a new chip that comes out. Every 6 months new technology hits and speeds increase.
For general college purposes, you aren't going to be any better off in 3 months when this "new chip" comes out.

17 inch is too big for school. They dont fit on desks, the laptop bags for them are huge and dorky and they're loud as shit. get 13-15 inch.

I dont know about school but I have an 15" HP that my work provides, and a 17" dell for myself. The smaller screen system lasts almost twice as long on the battery. i'd get the 15.

The problem with a mac is that no company knows how to troubleshoot it, or fix it. The best most would be able to do, is if it can boot into windows, they can do everything through there.
Macs are REALLY not popular in Canada. No company supports them, so anything you want to do or install needs to be DIY. My isp refuses to install or troubleshoot for macs.

I'd wait 'til Vista is out.. It'll be worth it, and if you can wait you'll save money or get a faster one for the same money. I got a 14" widescreen and i def wouldnt want ANY bigger to carry around.
I go to FAU btw..

I'd go with a MacBook Pro or if you want to save money a MacBook. You can run either Mac OS X (a superior OS) or you can boot the laptop to WinXP (and Vista.) I only boot to Windows for gaming.
There are Apple stores and authorized service centers all over the world. Either call Apple's 800 support number or check the web site for a location near you.

MacBook Pro 15.4-inch or 17-inch (diagonal) TFT display, Optional glossy widescreen display

Hands on: Running Vista on a MacBook Pro
Apple's top-end laptop runs Vista better than a high-end Sony Vaio
http://www.computerworld.com/action/...1&pageNumber=1
Apple's high-end laptop runs Vista better than a high-end Sony Vaio: a new report found a "Windows Experience Index" of 3.6 on the (older) Sony Vaio VGN-A790 laptop--compared with a "WEI" of 4.7 on the newer dual-core MacBook Pro, which it noted was in part due to the newer Intel processor and better ATI video card. The "hardware" report, the first in Computerworld's series about the use of Windows Vista on a MacBook Pro, notes a few shortcomings of running Vista on the Mac laptop using Apple's Bootcamp technology, including the lack of Windows' right-click (solved by instaling a separate third-party application called Apple Mouse), the inability to eject disks from the SuperDrive using the eject key on the keyboard (users can still use the menu in Vista), and the lack of elegant solution to boot back into Mac OS X, and some heat and battery consumption issues--due to the lack of power management functions.Muscle Asylum Project Athlete

Boot camp is still in beta. Once the final release comes out it should take care of the issues stated in the article.

I love my MAC and wont ever go back to windows.
the thought of not having to worry about viruses or spyware, way outdoes the lack of local stores. Which doesnt really matter cause their customer service is top notch. I have the 15in MAC book Pro and I am very very content with it.

Ya, I am probably buying a Mac, like the idea of having vista, os x and a unix distro all on one machine. especially since the project im about to embark for the military requires me to have os x heh

I have a laptop, i love it personally, but theres really no use for a laptop specifically, the only time it leaves my desk is if i go home for an extended amount of time. so buy a big one with a good processor and screen because unless you have a class that requires a laptop, you wont take it to the cafe to read emails and sip a double mocha cafe latte with whipped milk as so many people like to believe in college haha

Win booting is a nice feature to have just in case you come across software you can only run in windows. I only use Windows to play games or video cam on MSN. (Microsoft didn't design cam support into the mac version) As soon as I'm done I switch back to OS X.Muscle Asylum Project Athlete
