    Walking in the Dark

I do some hunting every now and then and usualy walk out to where I am going well before daylight. I found this on another site and it makes me reconsider ever going out before light again. Fake or not...WTF is that thing!!

Both of the above posts are what I thought. Looks like the thing from Lord of the rings. Assuming that is a joke it's a pretty dangerous one. If I were walking through the woods in the dark while hunting and came across it I would shoot it!

I am officially afraid of illegal imigrants that have eyes that shine in the dark when hit with a light. Only nocturnal "things" have the glowing eyes.

Human eyes do not shine in the dark when hit with a light. Things like Cats, Deer, Dogs, or other animals with historically noctornal tendencies have eyes adapted to the night which will reflect light back when it is shined at then. You wont find a human on the planet that can do it.

Hmmmmm....I'll have to try. I've never ever seen human eyes reflect. I didn't base it on research though so I'm going to drag my wife and kids outside in the middle of the night and tell them to shut up and hide in the yard. Then I'll try to find them with a flashlight.

Alright. I did the research and I am sticking to my guns. The nocturnal eye (of an animal) has a layer of tapetum lining the back of it. When light hits it, the tapetum acts like a mirror so the light actually passes through the lens from the back of the eye and shines through the pupil so we can see it. Humans do not have this thus our eye will NOT reflect light from flashlight, headlights, spotlights, or any other more of "Normal" light at night. Heck, even red eye isn't even a refelction of light. It's caused by the light of the camera flash occuring too fast for the iris of the eye to close the pupil. The flash light is focused by the lens of the eye onto the blood-rich retina at the back of the eye and the image of the illuminated retina is again focused by the lens of the eye back to the camera resulting in a red appearance of the eye on the photo. Hence, the newer flash-flash-flash-flash-shot camera. Allows the eye to get ready.

I remember hearing the same thing on the discovery channel. That is why animals can see better than humans in low light.

Whoa, cool! From experience, I knew that human eyes don't reflect light like many animals, but with NVG they do have a certain weird glow. BTW, someone call Frodo...looks like Gollum didn't die after all.
