Mixing 98, XP and server 2000

I have 15 98 machines and 4 XP machines running on a server 2000 network but for some reason 1 of the XP machines wont accept incoming connections at all the other 3 are ok. They are set up all the same way. duno if the fact they have blank passwords is afecting it or what. I had a DNS replication problem latley but that has been resolved. All the firewalls are unneeded and turned off.

when I try to connect to this comp it says something about the name not being right. I can connect through the IP addres of the machine but not the name. I checked the DNS and the NETBios and everythis seems fine.

Anyone any Idears whats going on?

well... need to know a lil bit more bout your set up... i assume you have a 2000 DC? Is it running dhcp and dns? are all the machines static or dns? When you say won't accpt incoming connections, i assume you mean remote connection? Does that machines allow you to remotely connect FROM that problem box to other boxes?

Without knowing all of that, i'd say more than likely your problem box existed before you set up the current set up adn more than likely need to flush dns on it.

LOL should have give more info.

I have 3 DCs running server 2000 2 backup and 1 file server the dhcp machine is a seperate Linux machine, the file server is also the dns server, global catalog server, wins server etc., so it is the main server

the xp machine in question is not just remote conections but just plain network connections from network nabourhood that cant connect to it. I can connect out to any other machine on the network from it. but not to it unless i use its ip address then its fine. e.g.

    \\ws01\ wont connect but
\\10.67.10.28\ will which is ws01's IP address

which makes me think its a netbios problem but looking at it doesnt show anything wrong.

    I just dont get it.

set up static i assume? I"ve had similiar problems before. If i were you I would just put in a manual entry in dns and see if that clears it up. Look in dns and see what ip , if any, it is referencing to your host name. Also did you try to flush dns yet?
