I'll tell you one way it can happen...
The wifey did laundry one day and the dryer is in the basement. It's an electric dryer and fairly new too.
What happened is the timer got stuck and the damn thing ran for 2 days straight before I went down to the basement and realized the dryer seemed to have been going for some time...I asked her if she was doing laundy and she said no, not for a couple days.
Well, needless to say, when we got our next electric bill, I was not at all pleased.

mine never hits a 100 summer or winter and i thought i was paying to much
but my water bill every month is 60-70

hah yeah your electric bill goes up during the winter cause the heat is kicking on and off all night... here at the house we now have the hot water turned off at night lol
