Speeding Ticket NJ, need info.
I got a ticket for doing 96 in a 65 the other day. I was following a group of cars in the left lane and he picked me up on radar. I got the ticket in NJ, but I live in PA and have a PA license. I'm not defending my actions, going that fast is stupid at best, but I need some help here. I heard that NJ recently enacted a surcharge policy, where you can pay the state and avoid points? Anyone know about this? Also, I'm thinking I should lawyer up. Do I get a lawyer from PA or NJ? What is my best bet to avoid points here? I know this is going to be expensive but I'd rather pay NJ than pay the insurance companies. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

dont know about that surcharge policy. i guess u can call a troopers barrock or the court clerk at the court house u have to go. what i do know is, hiring a lawyer is a waste of money. i know from experience. hell i'm not a cop but i'm in law enforcement. twice i got speeding tickets. both in uniform. judges dont give a damn. these highway cops r too good in court. just my two cents. good luck though.

Unfortunately for you points transfer from PA to NJ and vice versa... A lawyer is not a waste of money in this case...Find out what borrough the court case will be heard in. You want to hire a traffic lawyer very close to this area. The reason being is that they interact with the prosecutor at that particular court on a regular basis and have more pull then some outsider you might bring in from PA, which would most likely just piss them off... Then your lawyer who is local to that area may be able to plead you out with no points but probably for a hefty fine of a lesser charge. You can plead out to careless driving with no points and a hefty fine, however the catch is that if you are caught again for something similar you now will get that charge plus the one you would have gotten had you not pleaded out...So best advice get the zip code of the court you're going to appear in and then search that zip on yahoo for a traffic lawyer. This is not a sure thing but it is your best bet and it will be worth it to fork out the money now, rather then pay an extra $1-3,000 a year on your insurance for the next 3 years... Good luck..

sorry brother the surcharge policy is on top of points not instead of. You have to pay the state surcharges besides the fine of the ticket on what your insurance will raise

Im from jersey and i heard of people paying 475 instead of paying the points. For example in my case i was in the NJ turnpike doing 95 on a 55mph. I went to court three times every time i went to court they told me to get a lawyer but i didnt. At the end the prosecutor was tired of me not getting a lawyer and told me the best he can do; instead of 4 points do 2 and pay the fine. Thats much better than 4. However if this is your first offense you can pay the 475 and get no points if the prosecutor is in good graces. Good luck...

Not sure about the surcharge, but as far as getting a lawyer and fighting a speeding ticket thats up to you. In my state your fine would be $244.00 and cost you two points and some raise in your insurance. If getting a lawyer saves you money then go for it, take the chance that the cop doesn't show up for court and you win. The only thing you might be able to plead down to is a lesser fine, probably not a different charge. Whatever it is that you settle on it will be over and done with forever. I am assuming you took the traffic class already and cannot take it again, or you cannot take it because you were to far over the limit.

Also....if you didnt admit to the cop who pulled you over that you were in fact going that fast (which will be recorded by a mic that he's wearing which goes back to a recording unit in the car). You can try my speedometer trick if you have a friend who is a mechanic. You get your mechanic buddy or find a small shop and pay them $100 or so to write out a receipt for re-calibrating your speedometer saying that it was off by 15-20mph and there is no way that you would have known this...Might be critical in pulling down your points, and yes this has worked before surprisingly.. Any idea what I pay in NJ property tax? Those troopers need to be doing something better than stoppin citizens for traffic bullshit, like busting drug dealers....or even busting all the corrupt politicians in NJ which subsequently are why my ****ing tax's are so high.... end rant...
