    no sleep while on call...

Do any of you work jobs where you must work 'on call' for a couple days or even a week at a time? I'm a security administrator and I'm in a rotation where i take 1 week ever 4 weeks and I answer all of our emergency phone calls and alerts when servers have issues....i don't sleep for this entire week....and I'm salaried with no over time...the only benefit is in the week following my on call, i'm allowed to take off as many hours as I had to work outside of normal business hours. Anybody else work in a field where 'on call' is necessary? whats your experience?

yeah, i agree, those guys shouldn't sleep....but my job is security of the network, i'm past the days of help desk and local administration...i do the risk assessment and vulnerability/pen testing for Florida's Department of Health and a few other state agencies...my on call consists of "oh crap, we just exposed half the database to an attacker" or "foooook, half of the mail cluster is spewing spam and i can't log into the admin account anymore" and i have to run anywhere they call me to do the forensics and deal with the agencies that keep track of that kind of thing (homeland security, fbi, cia, etc)...high stress, no room for error
