Screaming for more power
Did anyone just see the show "Sport Science" on FSS(Fox Sports) regarding the additional power you gain by screaming?
-
Yeah, and it was absolute crap. That show passes it self off as science, but as someone that is involved in science it is just pop sci for sports.

The facts don't lie, regardless if it's psychological or not.

Facts, It was one experiment of one person!!! It wasnt even a controlled experiment. There is a paper that came out within the last month that was all over the net that shows no effect when spread out over a controlled, randomized study with sufficient numbers of subjects to get reliable valid statistics

The whole premise is that screaming during a martial arts strike gives you more power.

Hey MuscleScience, I don't mind being proved wrong at all, heck, I like to know when I'm wrong. What paper are you referring to?
-
It works. I was racing someone the other day in my new car and we were bumper to bumper. So i started screaming as loud as i could and i gained a foot winning the race.
-
Im not saying your wrong, I am saying that the show pisses me off sometimes cause it short cuts good science for ratings, although some of the stuff is pretty good as well, like the golf ball deal.
Anyway I have been looking for that paper for about 20 min now. LOL

I cant find it right now, I think I saw it in either the journal of strenght and conditioning, or MSSE, online. I will look for it more when I am at the lab since I have a access through school to the online journals. I could have swore that I saw it originally posted on here or another board at first. But i look as some many papers a week they start to blend together.

That was good DSM! I scream at my car all the time but it just don't help. That's alright MuscleScience, you bring up a good point. If I google it I'll probably get 50/50 on it. I just know a lot of guys in my gym must believe in the "scream" philosophy cause, dang, they sho' do a lot'a screamin'.

i "grunt" or "grawl" when im pushin on my last couple reps... i think it gives more of a mental edge then a physical one... although breathing out hard during extra strenuous lifting does help me rep out my sets... i would say im a grunter but not a screamer... works for me... there is some truth to the so called "theory"... i feel it give me extra aggresion for the last reps on my last set... but in martial arts the "kia" in tai kwon do is used as an intimidation tactic... i never do that in street fight... but during sparing matches and tournaments i vocalize myself to intimidate my opponent...

^ Agreed
I also used to grunt when i pitched for baseball, and i LOVED it when after i through a couple fast balls, i'd come back with the exagerated grunt and get someone to swing 20 mins early on the off speed pitch ... It seemed like i couldn't throw a strike w/out giving a little grunt, but i agree its all mental...for me @ least

I truly believe that getting yourself "hyped up" by verbal means gives you an advantage.

yeh i can see that... in high school a lot of teams would come out before a game screaming and yelling, and grunting and whatever trying to psych their opposition out.....but when i played, our team would come out silent...holding hands and just in the tightest formation 6 men wide and then everyone followed in line hand in hand...@ home hell's bells would be playing and we'd just walk out cocky as hell nodding our heads or w/e- fireworks went off...and our silence was chilling...
