Thinking about the reserves
I have a very good job, but always wanted to be in the military. I am thinking about the coast guard reserves, is this the best branch? I would prefer not to have to leave the US, as a reserve they have great benefits, decent weekend pay and retirement. Feedback?

After doing a lot of research before I decided to join a branch, from what I've read about the Coast Guard (from personal accounts) is that the rank structure is all screwed up. NCO's and higher ups don't know what the hell they are talking about not to mention their branch gets screwed moneywise (not the individual, but the money they can spend). I personally don't know why all this is, but I've read many reviews about how individuals felt about the branch when they were in it and almost all were negative.

I would really think about it bro. If you have a really good job it might not be a smart option with the world today. Reserves pretty much is active duty. Not sure about the coast guard though

Lawman and Boost, do what is best for you. Don't listen to all the negative. There is a lot that our country/military does around the world that people never acknowledge. Most people here could give a shit less, but trust me I care.

That is what I am thinking...I filled out paper work for the coast guard but they seem a little weird, ie no job listings and they want me to be a cook first then I could transfer into something else when it opens up. I was thinking coast guard because they do not leave the states for war, I have a family and a decent job, I am looking for benefits ans some extra money on the weekends, trust last thing I want to do is end up in Iraq..

id say if you signed up then you would have a better chance not going than going... its almost elections and you can postpone your basic and ait for a few months..... and then you have to go threw basic and a.i.t. and that takes time.... iraq isnt that bad. i went and you get used to it after about a week. i actually had fun there...go army national guard, they have way more jobs, and make sure you get a job that will help you out when you get out of the military, like helecopter repair... id say go for it!

I used to advise guys to go into the USAF, but I've heard that lately, they've made most of the enlisted folks take military police training, and then they get shipped to Iraq. Nuts on that.
One other thing to consider, is that if you join the Reserves, your employer might not like that, and consequently you might be pushed to the head of the list in case of a layoff. I heard something about this on the news -- seems that a lot of businesses have had people called up for service, which throws their operations into chaos. Then, when they return from Iraq, the law says they have to get a job back. Sometimes they've already filled it with someone else; so having someone called up by the Reserves makes that person a liability to their business.
Just something else to keep in mind.
