It's not a lifestyle choice if you wish you wern't fat. Most fat people are unhappy with the way they look, and wish to be thin, so they arn't choosing to be fat just can't control their piggy snouts.

"Obesity is a natural extension of an advancing economy. As you become a First World economy and you get all these labor-saving devices and low-cost, easily accessible foods, people are going to eat more and exercise less," health economist Eric Finkelstein told AFP.
What an assinine thing to say... for me, wealth and labor-saving means more time to eat well, and spend more time exercising, at the gym, etc. i find that it's when i have to work too much that i get fat! to me, the obesity problem is all about greed... greed of the people that make 'easy' shit that people eat, greed of the producers of consumables that want more of people's wallets at all costs - even their health, and greed of people who would rather stuff their face than do something productive with their time.

Oh, I know people are lazy, look at my post count to get an idea of how I spend my time at work. I'm lazy, but working out, playing sports and being outside is just fun. I don't know how you can be so lazy you would rather just watch a box where pictures are flickered in front of your face, rather than live life. If I had a dumpy body and people looked at me like some kinda gross creature from the deep, I would be sad on top of lazy.

Do articles like this give justification to the obese? "It's not my fault, I am a product of my society".
I think we have gotten to politically correct, As a society we have to "be nice" and justify people's lack of motivation and self control, they need help etc. they are sick, when a vast majority just need a swift kick in the ass and a dose of reality, they are obese because they make poor choices in life, if this means they need to pay for 2 seats on a plane it's their fault, if they can't fit into a seat on the subway, they shouldn't try to squeeze themselves in and sit on my lap, it's their fault. Some may have medical conditions but if you eat like shit and sit on your ass........

its how they deal with the overwhelming number of people who are obese... they accept it. and try to put a positive spin on it. i mean, look at male enhancement. they make it a fun, sincere gimmick on t.v. but in reality it is a medical condition that no man wants. media always try to make the bad seem, "well it's not the worst that could happen...in fact..."

Don't get me wrong, their are a lot of fat people in this country and by fat I don't mean obese or overweight, I mean fat, but this is largely inaccurate information. By that I mean when these studies are done they don't generally take into accont your lean body mass. They just take an average sampling of people and determine what weight is normal, overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. A guy who is 6' and weighs 220lbs (like me) is considered close to obese, but if he's only at 10% body fat than I don't think anyone would call him obese. However, these studies usually ignore that data. So, I hate to say this, but most of you on this forum probably fall into the category of overweight or obese. And, no, I'm not defending fat people I just think it's funny when data suggests that I'm overweight.
Best quote:
"But you can't say if you quit going to the drive-through, exercise more and eat more vegetables, you'll lose weight. There are so many more factors involved."
I can only think of one other factor: eating less.

Blome- your talking about the bmi index. age, weight, and height is all they look at so you can see where the inaccuracy comes from.
