Flat feet and Underdeveloped Calves
I've done a great deal of research concerning calf development. As most of us know, calves are extremely difficult to develop, and size is strongly dependent on genetics. I was wondering, do any of you know of any correlation with underdeveloped calves and flat feet? I have extremely flat feet, and I feel it hinders and kind of plantar flexion of the foot whether walking, or doing calf raises. Those of you who have small calves, are your feet flat? Those of you with large calves, do you have a normal arch?

I have flat feet, and my calves are FVCKING MASSIVE. Do you guys want a picture??
Gigantic calves run in my family, and whether or not you have big calves have much more to do with your genetics and the size, shape, and fullness of the calve muscle belly than flat feet.

You're lucky Atomini, I'd give inches off my arms to add some on my calves. Any others?

Bastard! I can't get mine to grow for nothing! I wonder if there's a correlation with flat feet and hairy legs?

I don't know if this helps but I had the same problem and I got those $400 in soles for flat feet or dropped arches, after using for couple of weeks my calves got much stronger and noticably bigger just from walking properly still training only once a week. also helps to stretch them and your hams to increase blood flow and flexibility. It worked for me but were all a bit diff. By the way my parents both have killer calves and my brother too but I got the shit end of the stick so I had to work it twice as hard, where were the genetics on that one?.... maybe the mailman is my Father!ha

I have a buldge on my foot were ther is suppose to be a arch cause ther so damn flat. N my calves grow just by looking at them, really its sick. It looks like i have a little ass on each leg. I thought it was because i was so flat footed, hmm. I guess it dont have anything to do with it.

I tried the dr Scholls but they just pack down after a week and they won't change your arch, they just feel soft in the shoe. You need to remold your foot or it will only get worse as time goes on. In Canada we can get custom orthodics at the hospital for about $40 and there really good, I needed the others for gym and running. I don't know how things are done (medical system) in the States but maybe they have that option?

Real men have hairy legs, lol.

It's weird, my dad's legs aren't hairy at all but mine are. Whats with genetics?
Also, my dad's calves are bigger than mine and he's never touched a calve raise machine in his life. Now, my grandfather died before I was born but apparently he had even bigger calves than my dad... and never touched a calve raise machine either.
I'm gonna be the next Mike Matarazzo, lol.
EDIT: Mike Matarazzo calves:
Guy had the best calves in bodybuilding.Last edited by Atomini; 02-10-2008 at 10:47 AM.

I'm sure I'll end up going this route. I have decent insurance, but I'm sure its going to be a lot more than $40. Do they actually remold your foot? I thought the only way to correct it was by surgery? I read some simple exercises you can do such as putting a towel on the ground, and rolling it by curling your toes. Has your arch gotten better?
Btw, I'd take some hair on my legs for size! Much easier to trim than to build mass!

Flat feet and huge calves here

i have flat feet and i guess you could say i have smaller calves... i think it has to do with my genetics tho... my family seems to have slimmer shoulder lines and smaller calves... so i definatly think it's all genetics... one thing tho, i have noticed when i wear more expensive nike air maxs (which is pretty much the only sneaker i wear), i get great arch support from them and my calves build better when working out with them on... its just an observation that i noticed... the better more expensive nikes have great arch support and seem to get better results when my flat footedness is corrected...

yep i think its genetics too. my feet are semi flat if u wanna call em that and i have no calves, regardless of how hard i train em i can never get em bastards to grow

FLAT feet here, and i have a tough time adding size to the calves. But, up to this point, i just assumed genetics were to blame. i suppose i could try some sort of arch support and see if it makes a difference. glad you brought this up!

Hmmm... This is very interesting because I thought somthing was up with this too. I would always work out in just a casual sneaker like thos new balance walkers and I would never tie them (did this for years) and I never had big calves. Once I replaced those with a new pair (same tyoe of shoe) and tied them my calves really started to explode. Now if you are still reading this and haven't given up on my post yet let me explain about my theory. The tied shoe kept my foot stable and prevented it from spreading out due to the constraint of the support while the untied shoe would let my foot spread out and fall into a flattend pattern over time.

I used to do that too. I've been tying them for a while, but still not noticing much. Pisses me off that I can put size on well with everything else, but not even a 1/4 inch on the calves.

the arch supports will hurt for the first bit cause they are stretching the tendons and muscles. Do they remold your foot....not so much but if your stretching the arch and your feet get used to it, it will mold to the mold! My arches are doing great from using them. I was going to get cortizone shots in my feet to relieve the pain but I tried these first and my arches are perfect.

hmmm...interesting idea.. never thought about this... I have flat feet and can only get average size calf... I did arch supports when younger due to intense pain in knee's and calves... haven't went back to it in years... dad is flat too. never linked the two together... when i start a good running program or jump roping program my calves blow up more then when i am not and training them with weights... ??? soon as i get off the size and definition drops off pretty quick...

I have a little foot pain. My right foot is more flat than the left, and my left calve is bigger/stronger. I also feel more pain in the right foot. I think I may schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to get custom supports made. Maybe I'll go to the plastic surgeon and get calve implants after that
