Cancel your Credit Cards
Cancel your credit card before you die!
Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die. This is so priceless, and so, so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today.
A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to Citibank. Here is the exchange:
Family Member: "I am calling to tell you she died in
January."
Citibank: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."
Family Member: "Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."
Citibank: "Since it is two months past due , it already has been."
Family Member: So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"
Citibank: "Either report her account to frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!"
Family Member: "Do you think God will be mad at her?" (I really liked this part!!!!)
Citibank: "Excuse me?"
Family Member: "Did you just get what I was telling you - the part about her being dead?"
Citibank: "Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor." (Duh!)
Supervisor gets on the phone:
Family Member: "I'm callin g to tell you, she died in January."
Citibank : "The account was never closed and late fees and charges still apply." (This must be a phrase taught by the bank!)
Family Member: "You mean you want to collect from her estate?"
Citibank: (Stammer) "Are you her lawyer?"
Family Member: "No, I'm her great nephew." (Lawyer info given)
Citibank: "Could you fax us a certificate of death?"
Family Member: "Sure." (Fax number is given )
After they get the fax:
Citibank: "Our system just isn't setup for death. I don't know what more I can do to help."
Family Member: "Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. I don't think she will care."
Citibank: "Well, the late fees and charges do still apply."(What is wrong with these people?!?)
Family Member: "Would you like her new billing address?"
Citibank : "That might help."
Family Member: " Odessa Memorial Cemetery , Highway 129, Plot Number 69."
Citibank: "Sir, that's a cemetery!"
Family Member: "What do you do with dead people on your planet???***No source checks!!!***

Snopes says it may/may not be true. They couldn't verify.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a moneyed aristocracy that has set the Government at defiance. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs.
"Specie is the most perfect medium because it will preserve its own level; because, having intrinsic and universal value, it can never die in our hands, and it is the surest resource of reliance in time of war." --Thomas Jefferson
"Experience has proved to us that a dollar of silver disappears for every dollar of paper emitted." --Thomas Jefferson
"Paper is poverty,... it is only the ghost of money, and not money itself." --Thomas Jefferson
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation, and then by deflation, the banks and the corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their father's conquered ... I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies ... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the Government, to whom it properly belongs."

sorry i felt the need to repeat this one.

It isnt hard google up. We are being washed of our liberties and rights everyday. This is a perfect example of how a deceased personis still charged 60 $.
Maybee they can call helicopter ben.
i miss the old days when the dollar was backed by gold and a bank that fraudulenty issued more dollars then specie (gold and silver aka real money) would go under and helicopter ben couldnt come so quick.

I guess the bar is not set to high to get a job as a collection agent......LOL, That was awesome and completely believable. They are kinda out of control though. I have this medical bill that I am disputing. I wont answer the collection calls and even changed my number. This prick that had my account went on my myspace and found my ex girlfriends name, looked her up and started calling her. AND THATS THE TRUTH....F***ers

Ya, they will do anything to track you down. They started sending letters to other family members asking for any known information on me. I eventually paid off all the stupid student loan shit but it took a long time and a lot of wasted letters from the collection agencies.

While Snopes may not be able to confirm that particular case:
That happened to my father-in-law when his dad died. Except replace "Citibank credit card" with "Verizon cell phone". They did expect that the estate of the deceased should pay the bill.
