Rawhide for dogs
How do you guys feel about giving rawhide to your dogs? I know there's a big controversy over whether or not rawhide is bad for them so that's why I want to hear your opinions. Rawhide, yay or nay?

Yeah, don't get me wrong. My dogs absolutely love them, but i've heard from several vets and on internet sites that rawhide/pigs ears/ham bones can cause intestinal problems if they swallow too big a piece. I didn't give my dogs rawhide up until this year and so far I've seen no problems, but that doesn't mean they'll never have any.

my sister's bull dog ate a big chunk of a nylon bone and had to have some of his intestine removed. So, I would stay away from those. I have hear rawhide can cause problems, not sure about pigs ears. Idk, I have always given my dog pig ears and she loved them so even if it is risky...whatever.

^^I was thinking the same thing that's why I started giving mine rawhide. I just don't want to have to shell out thousands for surgery if something does happen.

they are an important part of dog development for dogs like rott's , doberman's , pits, ...etc ..etc...
they chew by instinct to develop there jaw / teeth....if you want them to do that on your couch...go ahead.

I say NO.... I have heard of way to many horror stories of it causes alot of intestinal problems. Plus there are better alternatives to raw hide!!! How about a marrow bone or a turkey neck?? Both will get those teeth churning and bring out those pearly white teeth, then there will be no need to brush!!!

I guess it depends on how well your dog chews, mine seems to gobble up pig ears just fine without big pieces.

My vet strongly recommends for me not to give my dog any rawhide. I've already had one issue with her, when she was a puppy she swallowed a chunk of one and then had to go in and have it removed it was horrible for her, and I'm sure painful she couldn't walk for days because it tore up her intestines.
So I don't give my dog raw hide anymore unless it a HUGE rawhide bone and when it starts getting to about 1/2 of it's original size I just throw it out and give her a new one.

our rottweiler swallows huge pieces of shit all the time.......like we gave him a steak bone the other day and he just like chomps and explodes it in his mouth and eats it all......and he's 12 years old and has never had any issues

I have a wonderfull renasance bulldog (like a english but taller) and he eats almost everything anyway. It's normal for him to eat a few of my socks, not just chew them, but swallow them and pass them. He'll eat beer cans if they are on the floor. eats wood products if he's at work with me.
I give him those big cow femars that you can get at Walmart and he loves them. He has Kongs, Kong balls, almost every toy you can get at Pet Co. He goes to doggy school 5 days a week to play with other dogs when I can't bring him to work. I love the little guy, so he is spoiled.

I got an american bulldog and a boxer. we give them rawhides all the time. I've yet to have a problem. While living in rural New Mexico, I raised a couple hybrids (St Bernard/Timberwolf cross) and they ate everything. The real problems arises with big dogs if they are overly active shortly after eating. The stomachs will literally turn and kill them quickly.
