Ideas for part of my paper

Ok this is for my labour history class. The teacher seems like a hardcore socialist, but anyway heres what hes asking: Why was the activity of workers joining into a collective group such as a trade union considered a restraint of trade? The time period is the industrial r********* era. Any ideas?

lol thought id give it a try. i already have all the stuff i wanted to put in, just wanted to see if anyone had anything else worth looking into. guess not but i dont blame anyone as this shit is boring as hell.
