Friday Night Lights
I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the movie. I love the show.
In my senior year, we were the state champs. I was only 1 of 3 guys who got scholarships to play college ball. I'm not from Texas, but this show has so many parallels to where I grew up. Every time I watch it, I get tears in my eyes. Plus, that Layla chick is smokin' hot.
Anybody else watch it? What do you think?

Nah, we'd have been cool. Nearly all of my friends weren't on the football team. Most people did their own thing and didn't care so much about what others thought. That's not to say that we didn't have the occasional confrontations or fights, but for the most part everyone got along. We used to have huge BBQs/keggers in the parking lot during home baseball games. It was chance to hang out with a bunch of people and socialize. I don't think any of us much cared for baseball.
But I don't live in the past. The show just brings back some good memories. I'm perfectly happy with my life, except for where we live...and that will change soon enough.

Yeah, where did u play because I'm from west texas and had the privilege of playing Permian high every year. I actually played against that team from the movie (if you have the DVD, in the extras section you will see me chasing Booby Miles as he goes for 60+yds down the field, hahahahaha). That was during my sophomore year. The year I graduated (91) we had 5 players get scholarships to D1 schools. Three of us ended up in the NFL. One (Ray Mickens) had a lengthy career with the Jets.
Sorry for the rant...

im curious too. I played in south central tx and our qb and starting wr went to division 1 schools. The qb 2 years before us now has a super ring. Im playing at a division 1 ship school next year. Hoping to transfer to a div. 1 bowl team in a year or two

guys, I wouldnt say anything online to disclose my location or identity. But I will admit, I got fired up there for a second and was talking out of my ass. I have never seen any gamefilm of permean, so I really cant say one way or another legitimately.
my team, was what I think maybe a 2'nd tier team. meaning, if we played a nationally ranked team (division 1 or the big school which we were), we would probably lose by about 3-4 touchdowns maybe get blown out I dont know. More than likely though go into halftime a very close ballgame and get outplayed badly in the second half. I am just being realistic. aside from that, I have no problem saying we are definately "one" of the best public schools in the state. We have made the playoffs 10 years straight, undefeated several times. I would definately for sure say that my state is just as competitive as florida, cally, texas etc. we definately have about 6 teams that can consitantly make top 10 top 20 teams nationally each year or reasonably every couple or few. those 6, my school probably could not compete with because it would be essentially like playing a major city's allstars since they are private schools and actually recruit pretty heavily. our school, even though we actually lost 10-20 kids that can start for other programs, we still kick everyone's ass in our competitive league and go undefeated. Definately definately for sure an outstanding team and above average, but not a major force nationally. may be considered a threat state wide.
so, just being truthful hope you appreciate it.Last edited by IronReload04; 10-14-2008 at 07:03 PM.

Definitely not a big team at all. But they were very disciplined and very, very physical. They always had a big, strong, running back (ie Chris Cormier, Booby Miles). The town is consumed with football. The kids of that town run the same system from the time they are 8yrs old. So by the time they get to high school, there is very little learning curve.
Shortly after their state championship run in the late 80s and eary 90s, Permian was given the death penalty for recruiting players outside there area. They were disallowed to play post season ball for, I believe, 5 yrs.
Again, they were a great all around team. Very well coached and that 'Permian Mojo' was hard to overcome. Great program indeed!

definitely not the most talented. Only Ivory Christian got a full ride scholarship that year (SMU). But the Dallas Carter team they played for the state championship had 13 guys sign D1 and another 7 sign D1 AA or lesser. Every starter on that team got a scholarship somewhere.

wow.....was ivory "the preacher man"
was dallas carter just as damn good as the movie portrayed them to be? The movie would have made ya think they were the best team in the history of highschool. then again, they did have 20 guys go D1 which could very well be a record or something.

Well Carter only won the game 14-9, but they had to forfeit the title because they used an ineligible player. If you wanna see the most talented team of all time, check out 2001 Long Beach Poly. They have sent more players to the NFL than any other school by far. They were the subject of the book I posted in the link up top, and are in the video I posted as well.

Was Boobie as good as they say he was?
-
I saw the movie. Thought it was good.
I can kind of relate. We had a heartbreak loss in the semis 14-10. and we had 2 of our better players out. It was a very intense, emotional game to say the least.

Boobie was definitely the truth!!! This kid was around 6' 220-225lbs with legit 4.5 speed. Now before anyone goes on about 4.5 not being fast, there is a world of difference between a legit 4.5 and your buddy timing you. He was a real beast but had an IQ of about 70. Hahahahaha! I didn't know him personally (even though I had 13 tackles the only time I played against him. My sophomore yr was his senior year), I heard he never really applied himself and trouble with both the SAT & ACT.

A legit 4.5 at that height/weight is real impressive. Especially if he could juke, stutter step, and spin while heading North-South.
