Overweight Couple Told They Are Too Heavy for Plane to Take Off
A British couple who was told they were too heavy for their plane to take off have lost a collective 172 pounds since the embarrassing incident, UPI reported.
Alan Coupe, 54, and his wife Jan, 49, were seated in the back of the plane on an April, 2005, flight. A flight attendant asked one of them to move to even out the weight on the plane so that the aircraft could take off.
"The stewardess asked one of us to get up and move to the front, so Alan volunteered to move which I was thankful about as I was so embarrassed I just couldn't look up," Jan Coupe told The Daily Telegraph. "We couldn't believe that we were too heavy for the plane to take off."
"It was a decent-sized plane full of holidaymakers so it was devastating to be told that even a big plane like that couldn't cope with all our weight being at the back," she said.
The plane fiasco sparked the couple’s motivation to lose weight. They said they joined a diet club soon after and Alan has since lost 83 pounds while Jan has lost 89 pounds, UPI reported.
"I don't feel embarrassed about getting on a plane anymore — we all feel so great we could fly around the world now without a hitch," Jan Coupe said.

good for them for losing the weight - can't have been easy. i've been on a plane before where there were too many people on one side, had to shift some over. it was a smaller jet, like maybe a 40 seater though.

Yea I've been asked to move around to even the weight, but it was a smaller plane. Good for them for losing weight. Keep it up!

Well, they dont list what type of plane it is or anything. First she says "it was a decent sized airplane" which doesn't mean anything then she says "big". well which is it, big isn't a "decent size".
I would consider and MD-88 a decent sized airplane and it holds roughly 130people. With luggage balanced and then a population of large people in the aft of the plane it would move the CG too far aft and be difficult to take off.
I would see them moving more passengers than just 1 which makes me think this plane was a lot smaller than she makes it seem. People's perceptions are different on plane size. Being a private pilot, a large airplane would be something over 6 seats because it would probably be a turboprop which is pretty large for a private pilot. Now most of the public that are afraid of planes think that something like an MD88 with only 5 wide seating is small when i think it is HUGE. lol

ya, that isn't too obese but it probably still puts their BMI in the morbidly obese category. you have to look at the size of European people. Over 200lbs and not extremely tall is really large.
and again, it's all in relation to that plane. They should put what kind it is so we can get a reference.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I opened this thread expecting to read about a couple of very offended passengers who informed the media about the incident, and got a very big compensation pay-out from the airline for "emotional distress that was inflicted upon them due to the horrifying nature of the incident".
