Maybe you should go and spend an afternoon at the local burn center and maybe you would understand why some people here take issue with your question. Watching Dr's peel the skin from a disfigured kid might give you a different perspective, especially when you find out his smoke detector didnt work cause someone took the batteries out for the TV remote control.
Spending 20 years watching one persons ignorance become another persons tragedy has definately lowered my tolerance level. I take great solace knowing that Dariwinism/Karma always holds true.

Majority of people dont join the FD to be a tough guy people who want to be defined by their job as being a tough guy normally join the Police.
I have met some VERY naughty people in my time in the FD and im man enough to say im at the very end of the naughtines scale.
If you caused the death of others and lived, every breath you take from then on would be a crime.
There are guys like me in every firehouse. . . go along to a dept in a rough area... say on a par with the Bronx or by UK Standards (since its what i know):- Gorton Manchester, Mosside Manchester, Brixton London, Toxteth Liverpool to name but a few and see if you could take every guy in there, i have nothing to prove to anyone and you aint got the balls, so leave your ego where it is dip shit.

This has run it's course.
In my opinion, if someone wants to buy a house out in the middle of a piece of property, and they live there alone, they should have the right to remove anything they want. Hell they can sleep on cans of gas for all I care. But if someone lives in a multi-person environment, they have a moral obligation to leave all safety devices in place. No one has the right to choose for someone else whether or not they will be protected.
To the OP, you got your answers, to the opposing side, you made your point. I see no reason to leave this open any longer.
