Encourage School Attendance
Talking about a public high school.
This school a relative works at is having rather low attendance. Kids skipping, etc... ya know, typical high school kid stuff... or maybe not so typical lol
Need ideas/incentives to get kids in school.
Shoot...

But to think what actualy made me want to go to class, was the ones that were intresting and I actualy learned, not some dumb old teacher reading the text book I coulda done that shit dummy but one who no kidding learned it before they taught it and had something that kept me awake and intresed made learning fun.

idk i went to class cause i was always in sports, and you generally get in trouble if you don't. thinking about it, i actually was very liberal with my attendance to some classes, and school on days i didn't have practice after. i only skipped (or was actually sick) like 20 days my senior year, but thats still more than allowed. the vprincipal liked me so he was just like i don't care, do you plan on skipping any more days (this was in june) and i said maybe one, sr skip day, so he went in the files and took mine down to 14 missed.
but the truth is, if kids don't want to go, they won't. the best thing is to keep class interesting, maybe little incentives, or penalties for missing, but the kids that skip probably fail already anyway. being a teacher, you can't expect everyone to pass, and when they don't you can't take it personally. well not really.

I recently had a convo with a friend who is having trouble with his boys in school. They are not getting the results they are capable of. After drilling down with him on the root cause we came up with the rewards aren't there. They have punishments for failures but no rewards for succeses. He said it was thier duty. So what ia m saying is that when you figure out what motivates the indivdual child to do well and be in attendance you will have your answer. You can't find a blanket solution. PRaise ten times more than you correct or abuse!(j/k)

Easy quizzes everyday. I had a teacher that did that and I never missed his class. It requires the students to come into class if they actually care about their grade. I think most students do care about their grades but they know that they can get by if they just study for the tests and do their homework. Of course there will be a few that don't give a damn either way, not much you can do about that.

Sports is one way. Another way is clubs that cover alot of different interests. My highschool well not large had alot of different clubs. We even had an ice fishing team.
Another thing is teachers who still enjoy what they do. Alot of teachers seem to not enjoy what they are doing or really give a shit then it shows in testing and student attendence.

Excellent post and so true.
The best teachers are the ones who are passionate about the subject they teach. It's really a shame that the profession as a whole doesn't pay what it should and the respect is not as high as it should be. I maintain that if it were, you'd see the quality of education rise exponentially.
I would say that parents need to take a more vested interest in their kids' education. Teachers and parents cooperating to make education a positive experience is a winning situation. Not only should the teachers offer incentives, but the parents need to reward good behavior and achievement accordingly.
Perhaps one of the most overlooked individuals within the school is the guidance counselor (if the school even has one). A good counselor can enable a school and its students positively, thus ensuring success. A bad counselor can break a school and lead to despair on the part of the students. A good counselor tries to understand students' interests and guide them into classes/programs that will help them achieve their future goals. They also need to interact with the parents to help them understand what their child is interested in and give them the information necessary to facilitate success for the student.
Anyhow, that's just my two cents.
